The budgeting system in Moneydance currently only supports budgeting for income and expenses. Transfers to other accounts are not supported in the budgeting system by design.
As the transfer is from one account to another, it does not effect your net worth and budget in the same way an income or expense category will.

There is an existing suggestion ticket in our system regarding this feature, so I have attached the ticket to this discussion and will pass your feedback to the development team. Attaching the ticket essentially counts as a 'vote' towards this features implementation.

I guess we have differing views on what a budget is, then, because in my mind a budget is “were does my money go?”, which means it needs to account for ALL of the money flow, not just that which changes the net worth. As such, this is not a “feature request”, but a MAJOR BLOCKING BUG. It is, quite simply NOT POSSIBLE to make a budget with the current system - huge chunks of money, such as that for paying the mortgage, CANNOT be accounted for. I can’t stress this enough - the budget feature, in its current form, is UNUSABLE for anyone who wants to make a real budget.

But as I said, apparently you guys have a different view of a budget, one that doesn’t actually need to account for cash flow, only what actually changes net worth. And the current budget does do that. I can’t imagine how this would be useful to anyone, but I guess my imagination is limited. So, my apologies for my incorrect views of what a budget is, and the irritation I’ve expressed as a result of that view. I’ll limp along as-is for now. Thanks for attaching this to the “feature request”, hopefully it can be implemented in the near future.

ibrewster
