The trial version is fully functional with the only limitation is that it allows you to manually enter 100 transactions. Imported transactions are not limited, so you'll be able to fully test downloading data from your bank, and importing data from other personal finance software.

If you decide to purchase the program at a later date you can keep all your data, the license key simply unlocks the ability to manually enter more transactions. You can download the trial version of Moneydance from here.

There are two budget formats available within Moneydance - the 'Newer' format, and the 'Older Mixed Interval' format. You can find details of both budget types in this section of the knowledge base.

Using the 'Newer' format, (as seen here), you'll pick one time internal - weekly, monthly etc. All categories in the file will be included in this budget, displayed on the right. You'll see columns that display the budget periods - e.g. last month, this month, next month.
Within this you'll see two columns of numbers. The left number is the amount (either income or expenses) currently assigned to the category, for the designated period. The right number is the amount you have budgeted for the category, it'll be 0 if you haven't entered a budget amount.

To use the 'Mixed Interval' format, (as seen here), navigate to Tools --> Budget Manager. Select 'New' and choose the Period as 'Mixed Interval (old style)'.
In the main window, select the 'Edit' button at the top right of the screen. This will open the edit budget window. This budget will start with no categories assigned, and you can choose which categories to include. These budget items can have different time intervals, e.g. weekly, monthly etc.
