Two budgeting problems

Hello! I am trying to set up a budget, and the process has become so frustrating that I actually downloaded and paid for another piece of software. (But, they want more money to connect to my banks, so I'm back trying to make Moneydance work.

So, here's the problem:

If I make a new budget, it appears that I have to enter every budgeted amount 12 times -- one for each month in each category. Enter one month, hit Return, move to the next month, enter the amount, hit Return, and so on. This just seems maddeningly inefficient.

So, I try the "old" budget method. But, when I try to add a new budgeted item, the Category drop-down closes back up after a second. It doesn't matter if I use the mouse or the arrow keys, the thing pops closed before I can choose a category. So, that system is no good either.

I like the program, and I've got it hooked to almost all of my accounts, so changing at this point is a big pain. (And expensive, if I have to pay to connect to each institution.) I'd rather not have to keep my budget in Excel and update it manually, but the issues I listed above are making budgeting impossible.

And, if it helps, I can do screen recordings of both problems and upload them.

    Thank you for your response! I d/l the extension, and worked with it for a
    while. I got to the end of the process, and clicked Select All. After about
    three minutes, all the categories were selected. I then clicked Calculate
    All, and nothing happened. I also clicked Generate, and nothing happened.
    Perhaps I missed a step?

    To make sure we are on the same page.

    1. Did you download the extension from the 'Download' folder?
    2. When you started the Extension did it have a title Generator - Build
    3. To use the generator you fill in the amounts you want in the amount
    field and select the frequency in Period field
    4. Try it with one amount, click on the 'Select' field and then click on
    Calculate Selected. The number in year 1 should be updated.
    5. Click on Generate, you should be presented with a screen with the on
    line filled out as requested.

    Note: at this moment you have not created any budget items.

    6. Click on Select against the line that is filled out. Click on Create
    Budget Items. The line below the selected line will show the amounts
    generated. These will now show in your normal Moneydance budget screen.
    7. Click on Save Parameters to save your data, pick a file name that is
    meaningful .

    If this doesn't work please can you post the error log (errlog.txt) and
    let me know what happens.

    Should this work you should be able to fill out the various categories
    with the budget amounts. Expenses and Income are treated separately.

    My extension is an easier way to enter values into the MD budget so once set you use the MD
    budget functions, so as a specific function the answer, unfortunately is no.

    I use the "old style" budget with success and the values set continue month to month without any action on my part. I just have to edit the values from time to time as the budget amounts change over time. Also, never experienced the problem with the category drop down disappearing. Tried it again today and it worked fine for me. I'm currently on windows 7 64 bit running MD build 1688

    There is one MD budgeting snafu that you have to work around. The budget routine does not pick up payments or transfers to other accounts you have added to MD. So if you have your mortgage or loan set up in MD, the budget will not capture the activity. The "old style" did capture those transactions but something happened a few months ago that disable that feature. You can easily set up a work around by creating a special category to capture the payments when you set up your payment reminder. You just split the categories, one item to make the normal payment, another to item to make the same payment to the special budget category, then a 3rd item to credit the amount back so your source account only see's one payment. Then set up your budget to look for the transactions to the special budget category.
    Even with a mortgage, you can use this workaround to capture your monthly payments. At some point I think MD will resolve this issue, but it's been a few years now so don't hold your breath. It would be a simple fix by adding an option to allow budgeting transfers.
