Change an income account to an expense category

I have created a new category by posting a credit. Moneydance automatically creates this account as an income account and all subsequent entries post as either debits or credits to the income account.
How do I change this account to an expense account without going back and changing every post to a newly created expense account?

Do you mean you've accidentally created a new category as an income category, and it should instead be an expense category? I just want to be sure I understand your situation, since you seem to be using "category" and "account" interchangeably.

If I am understanding you correctly, unfortunately there is no way to change the core settings of a category or account after the initial setup once there are transactions assigned to it. We can try to fix this by making a new category correctly and moving all of the transactions to that. Here's how to do this:

1: First, make a backup of your data file by going to File -> Export Backup. We're going to be moving a lot of transactions around, and want to be able to go back in case we make a mistake.

2: Go to Tools -> Categories from the menu bar, and create a new category correctly. Give it a name to distinguish it from the old one, such as adding 'New' after the name you give it. (You can always change it later after this process is complete.)

3: From the Categories window, right-click on the old incorrect category that has the transactions in it, and choose to open it in a new window.

4: The window that appears should contain all the transactions for this category, with the associated accounts in the category field of the register. This is because you are viewing the 'other side' of these transactions from the perspective of the category, something you will rarely do in Moneydance. Press CTRL-A to select all of the transactions in the category, right click on the selection, go to Batch Change -> Account from the popup, and select the new category that you created. Close this window of your category register.

5: Go back to Tools -> Categories, right click on your new category to open it in a new window, and verify that all of your transactions have moved successfully. If so, close this window, and back to the Categories window. You should now be able to delete the old incorrectly set up category. After doing so, you can also rename your new category to remove the 'New' part of the category name.
