I use the Mixed Interval with the Foresight tool. If I had to choose one, I would go with Foresight. The MD budget tool just allows you to track your money activity in the past. Foresight gives you a way to see your future spending trend based upon your current balances and the reminders you have set up for future expenses. As a retiree that is important to me because I want to see where I'm going so I can make decisions where to move my money or where to slow down on expenses. The MD budget feature has many issues, but the New Style is almost unusable. It slows down considerably after your MD data has more than a few years of data and you have to move your budget month to month. The Old Style Mixed Interval lets you set your budget and you only need to tweak it when you see a need. You can also have duplicate budgeting entries in the Mixed Interval style that will allow your budget change automatically as payment amounts change related to insurance premiums, etc. You can set an end date to the current amount and a start date for the new amount. Also a big issue with MD budgeting in general is the inability to budget a loan payment. For some reason the MD budget feature will ignore any activity between accounts. So if you have your loans built in MD, you will not be able track the payments in your budget without some special methods to trick MD. But I do keep up with a budget setup using some extra steps to track loan payments and in addition I keep my reminders accurate so the Foresight tool gives me accurate future balances.

mhoggietag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/539796422022-04-23T17:39:12Z2022-04-27T01:13:49ZBudgeting, Mixed Interval or Foresight?

@ mhoggie

Thanks. I am already making use of reminders, for reminders about regular payments. It looks like to use Foresight well, one would almost need to spend most of your time in reminders. And use the regular program interface for tweaking the amounts for non-standard payments. I would rather settle on one budget tool because I don’t have the energy to put into two. Fortunately we don’t have any interest-bearing payments or mortgages. So that aspect we don’t have to tweak.

Personally I settled on foresight and keep a pretty extensive list of reminders, having done it for a little while now I find the forward looking view to be really useful.

obbiietag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/539796422022-04-27T01:16:30Z2022-04-27T01:16:33ZBudgeting, Mixed Interval or Foresight?

@obbiie Thanks for the vote for Foresight. I noticed it is not provided as a plugin in the version of Moneydance I am using.

From Moneydance 2022 Foresight has been built into Moneydance so there is no need for a plug in.

dwg
