Perhaps you should ask this in a Linux forum.

I would say that to keep your financial software separate from everything else, you should go to Users & Groups in Linux & Add a new user account specifically for you financial programs.

How many have you got? I know that there are quite a few packages in the Linux Software Manager (I’ve tried most of them), but in my opinion, you won’t find another one better, or even close to Moneydance.

Why don’t you just go ahead & download the trial version.

Jeff – just a user

jeff_ltag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/485422712020-08-12T20:42:47Z2020-08-12T20:42:47ZSystem requirements Moneydance Linux

When I talk about financial programs, what I am referring to is more of our
financial browsing- where we log into our banking websites as well as where
we keep track of our finances.

We currently HAVE a licensed version of Moneydance 2019 ( Purchased April
2019), but the VM has been running into problems overall. (It’s a Windows 7
VM that we are taking down since 7 is no longer updated.

We have gone with the VM option to completely sandbox financials to avoid
keyloggers etc from our regular browsing.

In my browsing looking for an answer to my question:

What are the SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS for MONEYDANCE for LINUX

I was not able to scope a clear answer to this question, and I also found
that when someone else asked a very similar question in September 2018 that
the question was DANCED around then, too!

How much memory does this program need?
How much processing power?

Our current VM runs out of memory when we have more than 3 programs open
and it always wants us to close Moneydance.

So WHAT are the RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS for Moneydance for Linux?!

Andrea Morellotag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/485422712020-08-12T21:21:58Z2020-08-12T21:21:58ZSystem requirements Moneydance Linux

From: sprimost

Just a user.

This one is going to be an "it depends" because of a number of factors:

(1) which LINUX are you referencing...there is a slight difference on memory management between the different flavors and then the different
desktop environments.

(2) memory usage is factored into two sets: "Private" (or the code specific to the application) and "Shared" (or the library files shared
among all applications).

(3) imprecise definition of memory usage, such as the difference between GB and GiB.

(4) what other applications are running at the same time, such as do you need Libre Office Calc simultaneously.

Having a done a number of tests with different flavors of LINUX and then
installing on various types of computers, I can only hazard a real "open
sky" estimate from what I have seen. Remember that using a VM, one can
increase the allocated memory (as well as increasing the video memory).
Also, when running a VM guest, you might be up against the maximum
memory of the host machine, forcing it to swap. Running out of swap
space can cause everything to crash (I leave it up to you to determine
the proper amount of swap space to be configured.) Even the VM should be
configured with SWAP, else it might (as you have noted) crash.

On a relatively well-tuned system, I can see that I have three java
programs (one of which is Moneydance...not sure of the other two) with
1.1GiB of "Shared" and 1.2 GiB of "Private". To note, the "Shared" may
not (and are probably not) just JAVA libraries but includes system
(LINUX and Desktop Environment) libraries (ya gotta have those GUI screens at the cost of using memory/system functions of the DE.

So, in a VM, using, say Ubuntu, Moneydance runs within a 2GB memory
(configured) space). ArchLINUX flavors run a bit less. But, as left unstated, you might be running LibreOffice Calc, so only profiling your
complete use case, can you get an answer.

As I stated before, your usage may vary.

Hope this helps
