You cannot archive/remove txns from MD. It maintains a record of all change txns ever made to build the dataset. The best you could is probably start a new dataset and enter balances and start again. Others may have better ideas.

There is no archive. The file .moneydancearchive is a normal backup file.

So, by going to "file" I can "create a new file"
I would have to enter each opening balance for each of the accounts in the
old file.
Is my thinking correct?

Investments would be more tricky as you would have to create your securities and price history. But yes, for bank accounts you can enter an opening balance.

An alternative is to use export backup, exit MD, copy and rename the .moneydancearchive backup dataset, go into MD, Restore Backup (that you renamed), and then in each account, select all and delete all txns, and then enter the opening balances. This would preserve your categories and reports..

ALWAYS BACKUP FIRST
