It is not clear to me what report you are using, your screen shot looks like a register. I would suggest you start by looking at the two Income & Expense reports, these are specifically designed to report on categories.

Des

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489239762020-12-23T00:41:10Z2020-12-23T00:41:11ZPositive balance shows as negative in report

Seems simple enough, I just can't figure out how.

When I click on "Income and Expenses" under Graphs & Reports, it brings up a pie chart and a bar graph.

If I click "Edit", I can change the date range, accounts and Group. But how do I narrow it down to just one category?

I'm clearly doing something wrong.

Thanks for your input.

mooretag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489239762020-12-23T01:04:04Z2020-12-23T01:04:04ZPositive balance shows as negative in report

I'm a fellow user

It looks like you want a report rather than a graph, reports are listed after graphs.

After you select the report it comes up in the last used state, click on the edit button and you get the parameters screen, scroll down to the line that starts "Select" and click on by Individual, then in the scrollable box will be listed all categories, you can use this to select only the category you want used in the report.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489239762020-12-23T04:15:01Z2020-12-23T04:15:04ZPositive balance shows as negative in report

Well, I thought I was headed in the right direction...
When I hit "Select", it brings up my "Selected Categories" which has 2 columns, Available Items and Included Items. See photo.

The problem is that these are not Categories. These are my accounts.
If I choose Tools from the top menu, then Categories, THIS brings up my Categories, where I can add, remove or edit them. Categories things like groceries, bills (sub category of power, water, etc.), travel, repairs, etc. See other photo.
It seems that Moneydance refers to these things as "Categories", but it also refers to my account list as Categories on the screen you mentioned.

So for example, if I wanted to see a list of all income and expenses related to Category "Class Reunion" from the photo below, how would I do that?

Thanks again. It seems like this should be way easier. Maybe I'm making it harder than I need to. ;)

mooretag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489239762020-12-23T04:29:04Z2020-12-23T04:29:04ZPositive balance shows as negative in report

See attached.

I have select the Income and Expense, Detailed report from the side bar,

Then I click on the Edit button at the top of the report to display the parameters screen. then I clicked on by Individual that gives me the list of categories to select from

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489239762020-12-23T04:31:54Z2020-12-23T04:31:56ZPositive balance shows as negative in report

Hmmm. I don't have Income and Expenses, Detailed. I only have Income and Expenses on the side bar.
Is there a way to add the Detailed option?

mooretag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489239762020-12-23T04:33:22Z2020-12-23T04:33:23ZPositive balance shows as negative in report

By the way, I am on Version 2021 (2006), just upgraded today.

mooretag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489239762020-12-23T04:41:55Z2020-12-23T04:41:56ZPositive balance shows as negative in report

Okay, this is really frustrating...
I found Income and Expenses, Detailed.
But when I click on it, my screen looks different than yours. I don't even have an EDIT button available. And nothing is showing up in the bottom sections.
If I click Generate, I get a report that shows $0 Expenses, $0 Income.

See picture.

mooretag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489239762020-12-23T04:47:55Z2020-12-23T04:47:56ZPositive balance shows as negative in report

Wow, okay, I finally figured it out! Whew!
That is wayyyyyy more steps than necessary to get to a simple report.

I was making the same report in Quicken 20 years ago with a lot fewer an more intuitive steps. But now I know. I just hope I can remember how I got there next time I want to create a report.

Thanks again for all your help!

mooretag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489239762020-12-23T04:51:40Z2020-12-23T04:51:40ZPositive balance shows as negative in report

If you are on MacOS you should go to the latest preview build.

To add a report to the side bar you click on the + sign at the bottom of the side bar. Scroll down to the report section in the screen that comes up and you should see the report and select it then click on add to add it to the side bar.

The provided report are templates not finished reports, this allows them to be customised for various uses. If you get a report you want to repeatedly use you memorize them.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489239762020-12-23T14:39:24Z2020-12-23T14:39:24ZPositive balance shows as negative in report

I am on Windows.

That's a great shortcut you provided. However, when I added the report using the + sign, it creates a report that show a negative balance, rather than a positive one.
Which circles back to my original question. Grrrrrrr.

I'll just leave it at that.

Happy Holidays!

moore
