I'd like to understand more about the primary vs secondary role distinction and how it influences the sync process.</p></div>r.j.rizzutotag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/543951922022-05-23T12:36:53Z2022-05-23T12:36:53Zsync process question<div><p>I believe there is actually no discernible difference..</p></div>Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/543951922022-05-23T13:52:30Z2022-05-23T13:52:30Zsync process question<div><p>So I can remove the primary instance without issue?</p></div>r.j.rizzutotag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/543951922022-05-23T14:50:42Z2022-05-23T14:50:42Zsync process question<div><p>I already said.... 'It will be fine. Also you can use toolbox to promote a secondary to be a primary dataset.'</p>
<p>So yes... But I would promote one of your secondaries to primary afterwards.</p></div>Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/543951922022-05-23T15:41:55Z2022-05-23T15:41:55Zsync process question<div><p>So it's fine not to have a primary, but I should set a primary? Can you<br>
explain why it is preferable to have a primary?</p></div>r.j.rizzutotag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/543951922022-05-23T16:32:49Z2022-05-23T16:32:49Zsync process question<div><p>There are a couple of deep technical things in MD that only work on a primary. You probably would never notice. I’ve given my recommendation.</p>
<p>(Not support, just a fellow user)</p></div>Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/543951922022-05-23T19:15:42Z2022-05-23T19:15:42Zsync process question<div><p>I'd really like to have someone from Moneydance chime in on the primary vs secondary differences. As a user, I don't think it should matter to me which computer I make entries on. My expectation is that the data will be properly synced in a reasonable time.</p>
<p>The fact that there is no way to tell when a sync completes is, to me, a serious omission.</p></div>r.j.rizzutotag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/543951922022-05-23T19:34:06Z2022-05-23T19:34:06Zsync process question<div><p>On this point ‘As a user, I don't think it should matter to me which computer I make entries on’… it doesn’t matter which computer you make entries on…</p></div>Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/543951922022-05-23T19:41:44Z2022-05-23T19:41:44Zsync process question<div><p>Respectfully, I'd like someone from infinitekind to explain the differences<br>
between primary and secondary instances. Clearly thereIS a difference, and<br>
it may matter to me in instances like this, when they are out of sync.</p></div>r.j.rizzutotag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/543951922022-05-23T21:39:00Z2022-05-23T21:39:00Zsync process question<div><p>I'm a fellow user.</p>
<p>The primary system is the normally the one that initiates the syncing process. It is the only machine that can set the type of syncing and where the shared location is, it also does the initial population of the shared location with data.</p>
<p>It is also the only machine the syncing password is set by.</p>
<p>In normal usage it is the only machine that can stop syncing and also the only system that the syncing password can be changed on, although that does require syncing to be re-initiated as the syncing password is used as the encryption key.</p>
<p>As far as I am aware it plays no elevated role in day to day operations.</p></div>dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/543951922022-05-24T00:08:04Z2022-05-24T00:08:04Zsync process question<div><p>If by "initiates the syncing process" you mean the initial setup, that makes sense. If I understand correctly, ALL instances, primary or secondary sync (pushing and pulling data) from the sync location.</p></div>r.j.rizzutotag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/543951922022-05-24T01:37:51Z2022-05-24T01:37:51Zsync process question<div><p>The shared location is used for data exchange so all systems have to be able to read/write to this location in order to pass updates in the form of files. These files have internal time stamps so they can be applied in order</p>
<p>Each instance of Moneydance maintains local data so this is the working copy for each system.</p></div>dwg
