Splits no longer open automatically with Moneydance 2022

I've just upgraded from Moneydance 2021 to 2022 and am entering some transactions for the first time since upgrading and found an annoying thing with splits for autocomplete transactions - the split window no longer opens automatically; I need to go to use the mouse to open it. I thought I might be able to press SPACE when tabbing to the field to open the split, but tabbing completely skips it.

In most cases I need to edit the split for autocomplete transactions, but in almost all cases I need to at least review the split to be sure it's ok. Having to switch from keyboard to the mouse to open the split is annoying, given it worked quite nicely before.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or an intended change, so thought I'd post here before posting to 'problems' in case this change was intended and, if so, to ask if there's a keyboard combination to open the split or setting I can change to bring back the old functionality?

    Hi,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

When you click a transaction to edit it, you can then press the keys 'Command/⌘' and 'L'. This will open the split window.
When viewing the split window, press 'Command/⌘' and 'N' to create a new split line.
When you're done, press 'Command/⌘' and 'W' to close the split window.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Thanks, Maddy. I've tried the shortcut and it works nicely as a workaround.

But can I ask - *is* this new experience the intention? The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking this must be a bug.

If I use autocomplete to enter a transaction that doesn't have a split, pressing tab takes me straight from the description to the category. This used to be the case for transactions that had a split, and the split window would open at that time.

But now when I press tab for an autocomplete with split, I'm left in the description field. Pressing tab a second time skips the category field and jumps straight to the 'c' field.

So I'm having to press tab twice to exit the description field for an auto-complete transaction that has a split, but only once if it doesn't have a split. This feels like an accidental bug that's been introduced.

    Hi Maddy,

I wonder if we could have confirmation on whether this change was intended or an unintended bug?

I see another customer has since created a Suggestion to return the old behaviour (https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/suggestions/14706-entering-split-transactions), but, as I explained in my last post, I get the strong impression this is a bug, given the need to double-tab out of the description field. Assuming this is a bug, I'd hope it would be prioritised and quicker to fix than implementing something entirely new.

As an FYI - this continued to be an impediment to me in entering transactions quickly. I've since reinstalled Moneydance 2021 to go back to the old split functionality, which is significantly better.

I hope this is confirmed as a bug and fixed the next release so I can reinstall Moneydance 2022.

    Cheers.

I would like to add my voice to the request to see this resolved and the MD 2021 operation restored.

Additionally for me, in many cases the new data entry either requires a different split structure or no split at all. So i would be very interested in seeing a more elegant way of clearing out the previous split once it has been identified (See https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/suggestions/14706-entering-split-transactions). I realise that this would be a product improvement, but don't want that to delay fixing the originally posted problem.

    Regards,
    Paul.

It's been a few months, so I thought I'd give the current version a go, but the bug still exists and I've again rolled back to the 2021.1 version.

Any chance we could get an update on this bug please?

Yes, this is one of several issues that has me staying with 2021.2 (and missing out on other goodies!)
Please at least ask Sean to state whether this is intentional or accidental. How difficult can THAT statement be?

    Hi Maddy,

Happy holidays and all that jazz.

Any word on when this bug will be fixed? I'm still sticking with 2021.1 because of this bug, despite having paid to upgrade to the 2022 version...

This bug is a show stopper for me to upgrade to 2022 given how frequently I use splits and how the bug impacts my workflow. It would really be appreciated to see this acknowledged as a bug and fixed.

    Cheers.

This issue is NOT FIXED, and so the discussion needs to remain open until we get it resolved. This bug is still a problem for me, and I would like to get a view as to when it will be addressed. Maddy referred the issue to the developers last October (2022), but hasn't posted back any results from that consultation. There should be an update possible by now!

i.e. it's not a deliberate action to shut a discussion down.

As to timing to address bugs/issues, that isn't my place to discuss, that's for IK.

@maddy - just to say, I'm *still* stuck running the 2021.1 version, despite having paid for 2022. Suffice it to say that this is essential functionality for me and I won't be paying for another upgrade such as 2023 until this bug is confirmed fixed.

Nb - I've not actually tested a new release since my last post in December 2022, but am assuming it's not been fixed based on the lack of official response here and nomads.freyer's post yesterday. Do let me know if that's wrong and I'll download and test.

Unfortunately, there isn't an ETA for re-implementing this functionality, I'm afraid. It seems that tabbing along and then clicking on 'Split' to enter a split transaction is still the expected behaviour up to Moneydance 2023.3 (5064) (the current version) or one can press the keys 'Command/⌘' and 'L'. This will open the split window.

That being said, the request ticket is still open and the developers are aware of it, but I couldn't confirm whether this is a priority, at present.

    Hi Maddy,

    Thanks for the reply.

I have to say that's pretty disappointing.

Can I ask if the devs have tested this? Even if the devs intend to stop splits opening automatically (which I think is a horrible choice; at least half of my transactions are splits based on a previous entry where I tweak the amounts), it's clearly a bug that you need to press tab twice to exit the description field.

After entering the description, tabbing should either open the split window (as I think it's done for over a decade), or it should at least take you to the C column without having to press tab twice.

Here's a link to two short clips I recorded using version 2021.1 and 2023.3 that demonstrate the issue. If you look closely at the second, you'll see that, after typing the first few characters of the description to match the previous entry, I press tab and am just returned back to the description field.

I really hope this gets back on the radar of the devs.

    Cheers,

    Jarrad

Just to keep this discussion open, I would like to reiterate that this is still an irritant on 2024.4. At the least, I would like to see some commitment to resolve it at some point.

At the same time, please also give some consideration to the related improvement discussed in https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/suggestions/14706-entering-split-transactions, as this would simplify things considerably for users of split transactions.

I can't believe that rjgiskard and I are the only ones concerned about this issue.

    Thanks.

Thanks for bumping this, Paul, and Maddy for replying.

Maddy, I think your reply came directly to me via email as I don't see it in this thread, so I hope you don't mind me posting it here so Paul and anyone else following sees it.

Maddy replied: "I’m sorry to keep you waiting. I've referred your query to the development team who may be able to provide further information."

Maddy, I'd like to add that I've been happily using Moneydance for, oh, must be over 20 years now (must've been around 2002/3). I've regularly paid to upgrade, as I last did when I paid to upgrade from 2021 to 2022. As you know, this bug introduced in 2022 caused me to immediately downgrade back to 2021. I never sought a refund, assuming this would be quickly fixed and I'd re-upgrade to 2022. We're now approaching three years since I started this thread and it seems it's no closer to being fixed. I'm still running 2021.1, which is not only disappointing for me, but a loss of revenue for you as I'm no longer paying to upgrade.

I've previously said I 'frequently' use splits, but maybe it would help if I added some additional context to why this split functionality is so important for me. I'd say 90% of my transactions involve splits. My spouse and I use it especially for cost sharing of expenses, from many (but not all) groceries, bills, insurance, pet care, holiday, etc. Most every transaction I enter will be a copy of an earlier transaction where I need to tweak the amounts and this bug with splits makes this unbearable when doing many entries.

I really hope this can be fixed and I can go back to supporting you by paying to upgrade to new releases again!

Edit: reposting this from an early post in this thread to keep it easy to find:

Here's a link to two short clips I recorded using version 2021.1 and 2023.3 that demonstrate the issue. If you look closely at the second, you'll see that, after typing the first few characters of the description to match the previous entry, I press tab and am just returned back to the description field.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm sorry for not fixing this issue earlier. I had made it a lower priority because the change was originally the result of a bug fix, but I believe the bug (related to text field focus traversal) no longer exists. The bug is now fixed for the next update, so please don't upgrade until you see v2025. If you are prompted to pay for the upgrade, let Maddy or myself know and we'll send you a free upgrade key.

Thank you for sending the video clips too - they are always helpful. Until the next update is public, you can always quickly open the splits window by pressing ⌘L on mac, or control-L on windows or linux.

    Thanks!

The testers have seen one Alpha release and that was back in February, quite a few issues were reported but we have had no updates since.

As such it looks like a public release is still aways off.

@rjgiskard -I just checked the 2026 alpha. If you are creating a new transaction with autocomplete and a split, the tab will no longer ignore the split, but will open the split and be on the first memo field.

since i do use the mouse i assume you know a keyboard key to invoke the done button as i don't.
