they used to have an "archive" feature, but got rid of it, because, people screamed, yelled... ok you get it.

I have almost 40 years of data, so I've definitely got you beat - it's sort of a diary. My file size is about 120mb - yours?

If yours is big (again - bigger than 120mb? Mine does take about 7-10 seconds, but I'm used to it.)- then consider Stuart's toolbox and his "shrink dataset" item - that deletes things you don't need, and if you've been using MD since 2015, you might find a benefit.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/546413222022-06-13T06:17:55Z2022-06-13T06:17:55ZHow to make my MoneyDance backup smaller?

Toolbox extension. Advanced mode. Shrink dataset. Set it to 1 day. It does not touch your live data but will purge out all the archive / txn files that you don’t need. I bet your dataset shrinks to about 50mb. Backup first.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/546413222022-06-13T12:37:57Z2022-06-13T12:44:20ZHow to make my MoneyDance backup smaller?

EXCELLENT SUGGESTION!
FYI - You can use toolbox 'Analyse Dataset & Objects' to show you the dataset size....

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/546413222022-06-13T14:33:09Z2022-06-13T14:33:10ZHow to make my MoneyDance backup smaller?

Stuart,

I am just a "strap hanger" to this thread, but I ran the tool as you recommend. It reduced my file size about 55%. FYI: I have just over 7.5 years of account information with a mix of investments, credit cards, checking & savings accounts.

Many thanks,

Let me give you some more information about my Mac situation. I might have misunderstood the reason for longer message appearing.

1) See the attached video of my Mac screen, while shutting down. The MoneyDance message appears for 6 seconds before setting down.

2) See the attached screenshot for my backups. The size is 8.2 mb, as you see.

3) Another screenshot show the MoneyDance version.

Thank you,

Post the file back here?

Where is your data stored?

Thank you for your response.

I can close MD manually without problem.

I don’t find the errlog.txt file your are talking about in my Mac. See the Spotlight search result as per attached.

My backups location can be found in the another attachment.

Best Regards

There is no such folder nor file. See the attached screenshot. I have never had any error on running MD. I am afraid there is some misunderstandings between us.

I like to forget about some extra seconds, rather than I may create problems.

Thank you for your support, anyway.

As you are using a Mac, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:

~/Library/Containers/Moneydance/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt

or:

~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt

or:

~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt

Depending on your version of the Mac Operating System.

If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder you can open Finder and hold down the option key while selecting the Go menu and the Library folder option should occur or you can open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and copy and paste in the following:

~/Library

This should pull up your local Library folder.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/546413222022-06-14T11:40:24Z2022-06-14T11:40:24ZHow to make my MoneyDance backup smaller?

… and with MD open you can help/show console. Can you post this. It will tell us where this log is located on disk.

Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)
