Report which shows which Transactions do not have a tag
This discussion is public.
Is there any report that I can use which will show which transactions DO NOT have a tag assigned to them. I use tags extensively and I need to insure that all my transactions have the correct tag - including those that have no tag. Ideally I could like to do this in the register, but when I sort on the Heading "Category/Tags" it sorts by category. There doesn't appear to be a way to sort the register by tags ( pls correct if I am wrong in this). Thus it seems like the next best option would be to do a report that shows which transactions do not have any categories assigned. Thanks in advance for your help. Regards, Michael

No I am afraid there is no report in Moneydance that will list all transactions that do not have a tag assigned to them.
You say at the end of you inquiry "a report that shows which transactions do not have any categories assigned" are you conflating categories and tags here? Categories and tags are two completely different things in Moneydance.

Ben: Thanks for your response. In answer to your question, no I am not conflating categories and tags although I can see how you might think so. It was merely a typo and instead of categories, I should have typed tags. I run several real estate business' and each property has a specific tag. The problem is that when I imported these in from Quicken, the tags did not come across. I have been successful in going back and manually adding in the tags on most transactions but a report that shows which transactions have no tags assigned would be very helpful in making sure I have corrected every transaction. My other alternative is to manually parse through the transactions looking for the few transactions that I have missed (ie where I have not applied a tag to). That is why a report OR a way to do this in the registry would be so helpful. I also looked at exporting a report to Excel but I can't find any report that list transactions by Tag (other than the Tag Summary report) but that only gives top level information (no drill down). Is there any report that list details of transactions sorted by Tags? I so want to use MD to replace Quicken going forward but unless I can report detail transactions by Tags, this would be a deal breaker for me. Please help. Regards.... Michael

Hi Michael,
Unfortunately, there isn't currently a facility to do what you are looking for.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Jon - Thx for your response. Unfortunately Jon, the lack of reports for Tags is much more than an inconvenience. Its pretty much a show stopper in terms of being able to use MD in place of Quicken (for me).
It seems extremely weird to me that Money Dance offers Tags as a way to differentiate your data on the front end, but then does not give you any way to pull that data out on the back end (reports). Why even have Tags if this is the case? WHy have a summary report if you cannot drill down to get to the detail? I see this as a major weakness of MD for anyone that wishes to use Tags.
I don't doubt that the program is limited in this manner as both you and Ben have indicated that it cannot be done. So....if that is the case, I have the following questions: 1) Is there any other way to get at the data? How about writing an extension to do this? or , can a custom report be written? Can you refer me to a paid consultant who could write this? 2) Given that this seems to be a major weakness of MD (IMHO), is there any plan to correct it in a future version? I know that Software companies are reluctant to talk about future versions but since this seems to be a major deficiency I am hoping you can comment as to plans to have reports that can draw out the detail of tagged data in the next release of Money Dance. Finally - just as information, if you export MD to QIF file and then import this QIF file into Quicken, the file comes across very clean WITH Tags. So I could use Quicken to pull reports but this seems to defeat the whole purpose of switching from Quicken to MD. And, while a QIF export seems to preserve the Tags, a Tab Delimited export does not. So if nothing else, could the Tab Delimited export routine be rewritten to include the Tag data. This simple solution would allow me to export my data to Excel and pull all the reports I need.
Thanks in advance for your help....Michael

I am sorry that the tags feature of Moneydance does not meet your needs.
I was just about to refer you to the private contractor who wrote the Moneydance "Find and Replace" extension http://mennesoft.com/findandreplace/ and decided to experiment with the latest version of his extension first. With v83 of this extension it does seem possible to list transactions that do not have a transaction tag assigned to them. Once you have the extension installed in the Find and Replace window check the "Tags" box on the find side, ensure that no tags are selected and select the "exact" option. Then click the find button.
See the attached screenshot.

Ben: Sorry for the late response on this. This is EXACTLY what I need. Thanks for taking the extra step to experiment with this extension and find the right solution for me. What is really cool about this is not only can you see which of your transactions are missing a tag but you can also sort "by tags" so that you can correct any mistakes. I love this extension and anyone who works extensively with tags will find it very useful. Also, in another post I lamented that there are any reports (other than Tag Summary) that work with Tags where you can see detail. Although I urge you in your next version to create such reports as a workaround you can display all your transactions in the Find and Replace extension and then copy those transactions to Excel. Unlike the canned reports the Tag field comes over to Excel....making this a excellent utility to transport transaction data from MD to Excel.
Thanks again for your help in this... I love MD and with this extension I can pretty much replace Quicken. Regards....Michael

Hi Michael,
I'm glad that that function works for you! I've also added your suggestion to add an option to filter reports by transactions that don't have tags to our ticketing system, so the developers will be looking into it.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!
