Your questions raises a lot of points, probably some of which you are not aware of. I'll try to unpack at least some of them.

It seems clear that you want to be able to access your data from work and also from home so I will start there.

Directly accessing your data using Moneydance across a network, even a local network is not advisable, not recommended and can cause problems, the software is not designed to work in a way that happily operates in that environment, the way syncing works calls for a different methodology to what works over a network.

Moneydance data is not held in a single file, it is held across many files. A Moneydance backup is not just a copy of your "file" it is actually an archive of all the files that make up your Moneydance data store in one file. hence to work with a Moneydance backup you have to restore the file so it is more of what a traditional system level backup is like.

So what you are thinking might be options are not really in this case.

Moneydance Syncing is the method that has been developed so that data can be shared across multiple machines, with the syncing under the control of the Moneydance software.

In brief how it works is that each machine has its own local copy of the software along with a local copy of the data. This local copy is what you interact with. In the background Moneydance uses a shared location so that the software can pass new data, updated data and changes between each machine.

So on the surface it would appear that syncing is the approach to take, however the viability of this is heavily dependent on the configuration of your office network. Corporate networks generally have firewalls between them and the internet and restrict what can flow between the networks, they also often restrict the services that are available on the internal network.

Given you are using Windows the initial question I would have is can you access Dropbox from the office computer?

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/558585722022-09-26T03:14:33Z2022-09-26T03:14:33ZNot sure if what I want to do is syncing?

Wow, I have a lot to learn.

Syncing would be each computer with it's own program and file that syncs somehow
with the other.

Would this be automatic when set up or something I would do after doing some
work?

I have not used Drop box. Geard the name so will Google that and learn.

Truly appreciate your helping me learn

roytag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/558585722022-09-26T03:21:16Z2022-09-26T03:21:16ZNot sure if what I want to do is syncing?

Once you have set up syncing in Moneydance then the software manages it going forward, human interventions then would only be necessary if something goes wrong.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/558585722022-09-26T11:06:16Z2022-09-26T11:06:16ZNot sure if what I want to do is syncing?

Hi Roy,

I can see you’ve received a reply from one of our knowledgeable Moneydance customers. To add to this useful information I thought it's worth mentioning that you can find the steps for setting up sync in this article of the Knowledge Base on "Syncing with Other Computers" here.

Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Moneydance on. So I set the "C" drives to be shared folders including the
advances sharing of read & write.
Verified I woul navagate to the other computer and copy and past files to
make sure theat worked.

Downloaded moneydance to the new computer and entered my registration. Tat
worked fine. I thought starting a new file would be wrong so think I opened
a shared folder somehow instead( sorry it has been a long morning) but now
when I open Moneydance on my notebook I see what looks like my file but not
correect. There is a hugh amount of unconfirmed items in my checking
account that are long confirmed on the desktop? so don't know if I should
confirm all them. The balance is off by a little too.

I finally got everything on the desktop working very well and don't want to
mess that up.

Should I remove moneydance from the notebook and start over to not mess mu
my desktop?

Sorry but this is way beyond my skill sent but would like to learn, Roy

roytag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/558585722022-10-03T10:07:53Z2022-10-03T10:07:53ZNot sure if what I want to do is syncing?

Firstly, if you haven't already, you should download and install Moneydance 2022.5 (4091) on all of your computers! This is a free upgrade for you!

Then, on the computer where the file you wish to sync is stored, launch Moneydance and take a manual back up of the file you consider to be the most up-to date. Choose File --> Export Backup and save the file to e.g.your desktop (just in case).

Navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions and install the Toolbox

Launch Toolbox and from Toolbox Options (on top left corner) choose "Advanced Mode".

Click Advanced mode - red tab (on the right).

Choose the option: Force a refresh/Push of your local dataset to Sync. Wait a few mins. This will reset and update sync with a new consolidated dataset.

Launch Moneydance again on the same computer and navigate to File->Syncing and choose a sync method.
Preferably, Dropbox Folder (it's faster!)

Set or take note of your existing "Passphrase".

ensure the Dropbox client is installed and running on this computer, if you opt for Dropbox Folder as sync method.

On the notebook

Navigate to File->New->Open synced file.

Choose the same sync method as the primary computer

Enter the same Passphrase to match

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.
