Data File Size and Response Times
The response times in MD are slowing down. It has become noticeable in the last few months. Is anyone else experiencing this? My data file is over 150MB. Can anything be done about this? I need to keep all my data in the file, so archiving older data is not an option.
Thanks..

Use Toolbox, Shrink Database as a start.

What version of MD are you using and what OS?

After running shrink dataset, use toolbox, analyse dataset and objects and upload that output here. Also grab help/console and upload that here too.

Hi Will,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.
Generally, delays in opening or closing/backing up your data file are usually due to either your data file or the backup location from the preferences being located in a shared folder.
So, you may want to ensure that your data file is stored in the default location, to start with.
Additionally, since you own a license of Moneydance 2023, you could install Moneydance 2024.2 (5134). This is now available to download from this page.
For a full list of improvements in the preview version, please refer to this page.
We recommend overwriting or manually removing the older version.
In order to decrease your data set size, you could navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions and install the Toolbox (version 1065).
Launch the Toolbox and select Updated mode (at the top).
Click on MENU: Advance Options and choose: Shrink Dataset size. Set it to 1 day.
You should then carefully follow the on-screen instruction, allowing the disclaimer and restarting Moneydance once the process is complete.
Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

Using Sonoma 14.5
Using MD 2024.2
Shrink done. Before and after output attached. I think I have uploaded everything asked for. I will try MD for a week or so and see what difference shrinking makes.
Appreciate the prompt response from all, thank you..

Unfortunately, we are aware of an issue with Sonoma and iCloud Drive Sync that causes some slowness, Will.
I believe this is what might causing the issue in your case.
So, we recommend disabling iCloud Drive sync or switching to a different sync method.
To achieve this, from your computer/s:
Choose 'Don't Sync' and close Moneydance.
Set up sync again as outlined in these articles:
"Syncing with Other Computers" here
"Syncing with Mobile App" here

This comment was split into a new discussion: Security Price Entry extension
You may be right, Maddy. The inebriation only started in the last year or so and I only started syncing in that time period. I want to be able to sync (I am not willing to use any site other than Apple/iCloud), but it not a need, so if it continues like it has over the next week or so I will disable syncing.
Separate question: On Security Price Entry extension, is it possible to only list active stocks/bonds? I do a manual update every Friday and month-end, since to auto-updates don't work for me at Yahoo, etc., and I don't have an API. I can post as a new query if you wish.
Thanks..

Thank you for your feedback, Will!
I split your last query to a separate thread as it concerns a different topic.
I'd close this discussion for now, but please don't hesitate to get back in touch, if you need further assistance.

Shrink reduced your dataset from 160MB to 67MB. Not bad!!
Toolbox 🧰 +1 😃
Please grab help/show console and upload that here.

Agreed. I think the attached is what you are looking for. I am assuming nothing proprietary is in this files I am uploading without hesitation! :)

Nothing obvious in the log. So I suspect iCloud Sync. Is speed better when sync off.
There are a lot of outdated extensions, so I would update all and delete the rest…
12 Posted by Will on 14 Jun, 2024 09:01 PM
I noticed that, too. Alas, the only Extensions I have installed are
MoneyPie, Security Price Entry, Stock Glance and Toolbox.
I was going to give the update I did a week before I disable sync. Will
let you know.
Thanks..

Stuart, I always learn new things just reading through some of these issues that others are having. This whole "shrink" is a case in point. I have two installations of Moneydance (both Mac systems and running MD 2023.3) and sync via Dropbox. My data set is only 30.9 MB on both systems.
Question: When one does the "shrink" thing, does it need to be done on both systems, or do you do it on one and then the "sync" takes care of the second system?
14 Posted by Stuart Beesley ... on 14 Jun, 2024 09:23 PM
You can do shrink on either copy, or both. The ‘shrink’ does not replicate.
15 Posted by Homer712 on 15 Jun, 2024 01:39 AM
Followed Maddy's instructions in Post #4 and ended up shrinking the data set from 30.9 MB down to 8.9 MB. At first I was surprised, but then I've been using Moneydance since 2007 and have never performed a shrinking of the data set, so maybe that reduction is pretty normal.
16 Posted by dtd on 15 Jun, 2024 02:28 AM
I've done a shrink a few times - it normally goes from about 150mb to 87mb (40 years of data and lots of stock histories).... it does begin to grow again, so I do this 2-3 times per year.

Toolbox 🧰 +1 😃
18 Posted by Homer712 on 15 Jun, 2024 11:55 AM
The Toolbox menu (at least mine) has additional items listed (see screenshot). Is this by design? I think I understand the first two, but the last one I really can't figure out.
19 Posted by dwg on 15 Jun, 2024 12:07 PM
The extra items are intentional, they are standalone, although part of the suite.
The Zap one deletes the contents of downloaded memo fields,

Thank you!

So, it became clear that the update to the current version didn't work. I disabled Sync and the experience is much smoother. I hope we get to a point where syncing in iCloud runs smoothly; I like the feature.
Thanks, again, to all who helped on this.
