Memo Automatically Re-Populating

Transactions download with the memo field pre-populated. When I'm confirming transactions, I delete this memo, and then hit "Confirm" in the right sidebar for the Current Transaction and the memo field re-populates with the data I just deleted.

Note - these are not transfers - so the memo field is not coming from a different account and these are not split transactions. These are simple straight forward purchases and charges.

Is it possible to stop Moneydance from re-populating the memo field I just deleted?

Thanks,

Use toolbox extension. There will be a new extensions menu to zap/swap the memo fields. This will do what you want. Run regularly.

    Stuart,

Before I made my post, I half-expected that Toolbox would come to the rescue on this one way or another. A very helpful extension indeed! Thanks for continuing to work on it and I look forward to the update.

When downloading transactions from the bank, some of the transactions have the memo enclosed in square braces [...]. Deleting the memo does not work, it only returns. My work around has been to type a single letter or space.

In my opinion, downloaded transactions should not change the memo field. Most of my entered transactions have no data in the memo field. When merging transactions download from the bank, my blank memo field gets overwritten often with useless data.

Also, it would be nice to have a setting to not populate the memo field from a memorized transactions.

If you see [information] in square brackets, then this normally means you are viewing the 'other side' of the transaction. You cannot remove this from the side you are viewing... But if you enter info (e.g. a space) then this 'hides' the other side's info.

To update this data, right click, select 'view other side' and then edit it there..

NOTE: If you are viewing the data from the category register, be very careful....

    Thanks for the tip.

I went back to edit a transaction where I had entered an ‘x’ in the memo field. After the x was deleted the memo field reappeared. Taking your suggestion, I went to the other side of the transaction and deleted the memo data at that location. Returning to the original transaction, I could see the memo data was now deleted.

I don’t normally view the other side. About the only time I use it is when I enter the information in the wrong account. It is an unpredictable place to be and not a place I would want to do any batch editing.

    Thanks for the fix.

In the longer term it would be nice if Moneydance were to provide the ability to prevent blank memo fields being overwritten by downloaded transactions from the bank.
