Does Money Dance Run on an Offline Computer
I am looking for a personal finance program that will run on a computer that -- for security -- is never connected to the Internet? That seems to have been true for Moneydance in 2012, but is it true for the 2025 version?

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi Paul
The Moneydance program is installed on your computer and your data also is on your hard drive.
If you use the optional Moneydance sync engine so your data is shared between computers or to your mobile then the data does use a cloud server but is end to end encrypted with the key only held on your devices. But as I say this feature is optional and if not used all stays on your computer.
Hope this helps.

just a user,
That's the beauty of MD. No network needed if you just want to enter everything manually.

The above comments are correct. There are several features in Moneydance that connect to the internet in various ways, but these are off unless you activate them, and are not needed for the program to function.
If you haven't already, I encourage you to download our free trial version from http://infinitekind.com/downloads and experiment with the program before you decide if you would like to purchase it. The demo version is fully functional and allows you to manually enter 100 transactions. Imported transactions are not limited, so you'll be able to fully test things like importing from other programs or your bank. If you decide to purchase the program at a later date (from http://infinitekind.com/purchase) you can keep all your data, the license key simply unlocks the ability to manually enter more transactions.
In case you haven't found it yet, detailed information on how to use the program can be found at https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb

BTW, if you want to sync transactions without being online, you could download QFX files from your bank / investment company's website, then import those files into MD. That would save the effort of manual entry. In your case, assuming that the computer is not online at all, you would need to download QFX files elsewhere, copy them to a physical medium (e.g., a flash drive), then take that to the computer with MD and import the files.
That would be a lot of effort if you wanted to sync every day, but if it's only, say, every week, you may find it worthwhile.
This all assumes that your financial institutions actually provide QFX downloads! Some may not, but that's easily checked.

Hi Paul,
2 more cents...
If you want to sync the Moneydance data on computer 1 with computer 2, you can use a shared folder on a LAN.

Thanks, Ethen.
I’ve gotten the free trial version and imported my 25 or 30 years of Quicken data. I’ve got some questions before I buy it:
I’m not seeing transactions in (at least) one credit card account that are older than about ten years. Is that a limit (by date or by number of transactions) in the trial version? Is there a transaction limit in the paid version?
None of my repeating transactions in Quicken appear to have been imported. Will I have to re-create those, or if I buy a license and enter the key, will those appear? Or would I have to re-import from the QIF file?
Can I hide the accounts that appear in the left-hand pane? Most of them are no longer used, but I need to keep them in the database. If I mark them inactive, they still appear, but that takes up space in the pane.
Thanks very much,
Paul
2. Is there a way to hide the categories that are offered when entering a transaction? have a huge number

there is no time limit on transactions
in the trial there is a 100 txn limit, but that does not stop any from being imported. So that also is not the issue. Check the source qif file.
you have to manually recreate repeating txns as Reminders.
yes, right click accounts in the left side bar and select remove from sidebar
categories. No. Try making them inactive.

Thanks to everyone who replied, especially Ethan.
It turned out that all of my Quicken transactions were imported and in fact appear in Moneydance, so that's not an issue.
I'm now going to try it out, and if no problems appear, then buy it.
Thanks again,
Paul
