budget requests

I am a newbie to MD so the issues I have found may have simple solutions I have not found yet.

1.Be able to select and deselect categories when creating budget reports/ graphs. Also an option to select expences only or incomes only.

  1. Budget to be viewed as a line graph showing actual, budgeted and difference which includes the selection options of the point above for incomes and expenses only. This gives you a quick idea of how you travel over time.

  2. Budget reports/ graphs show categories that are not listed in your budget. MS Money always listed the parent category and its amounts. This allows you to see if expences are slipping past your budget without you knowing. You could be blowing alot of money and be none the wiser when checking how you are going with your budget. I know there is an extension which does do something similar (detailed budget) but it still does not quite hit the mark. somewhere in between these would be ideal.

Cash Organiser for the pocket PC had one of the best layouts for budgets I have seen.

That said I love the simplicity of Money Dance. After years of MS Money I found it to confusing an interface but I really like your approach. I am hoping 2009 will bring more to graphs and budgeting as this is the main reason for logging all this data, to look back on your spending and make decisions about what to change.

I am sorry I haven't managed to respond to you post sooner, Things have been very busy on the forum lately.

I realise that the budget report could be improved. And I believe that the detailed budget report would meet many of your suggestions. What exactly does the detailed budget report not do that means it does not quite hit the mark for you?

If the budget report was able to

    1. show a total expense for categories not listed in the budget
(ideally this would be for each of the parent categories)
    2. A graph showing budget over time and the actual expenses and income
    over time
    3. The ability to deselect certain categories
    4. Customized date ranges
    5. A percentage over or under currently(which it may do already)

Basically the detailed budget is to complex. I am after something
presentable to my wife so we can assess how we are going with our
income and expenses so we know if we can splurge or we have to pull
back in certain areas as well as have a quick overall look at the past
12 months or so. If I goto her with the detailed budget it is
overwhelming us with numbers. The interface and lay out is just to

Thanks for you response, for me the budget is what it is all about.

I have created a couple of tickets in our suggestions tracking system based on some of your suggestions. Here are the links:

If you register and log into trac you can vote on these tickets. The more votes a ticket gets the more likely it will be implemented.

    Just noticed
a request to be able to see expenses that do not fall into the
    categories listed in your budget.
It has been closed due to it being invalid.

Does this mean it can already be done or that its not considered

If it is considered unnecessary please reconsider.
If you do not know that you are overspending because it is hidden from
view then there is no point for a budget at all and for me there is no
reason to track accounts other than to see if I was paid which hardly
    requires accounting software.
