Hi
This question has come up a few times and the best way to recorded an initial quantity of stock that we have come up with is as follows.
Create a new income category called "Initial Holdings". Do this by selecting Tools->Edit Categories. and click the new button.
Add a new security to an investment account. Do this by clicking on the investment account on the home page, select the "Securities Detail" view and Click the "Add security" button. Click the "New Security Button" Enter at lease the name, symbol and price. Click OK, set the type to "Stock" and Click OK again.
Click on the register view for this investment account. Create a new transaction. Set to the date to a date in a previous year. Set the type to "BuyXfr" set the transfer category to be "Initial Holdings". Enter the number of shares and hit return to record the transaction.
See the attached screen shot fo an example of how to set up the transaction.
Sincerely
Ben Spencer
