Hi Dave.

Assuming you are now running Moneydance 2019 and have two computers and a number of mobile devices you need to use at least a free Dropbox account.
Moneydance has an embedded sync engine which allows you to enter a transaction on one device and within 60 seconds it will appear on the other devices. The data sets are on your computer’s hard drive not in Dropbox.

If you were syncing between just computers OneDrive will work.

With Moneydance 2019 YOU MUST NOT locate your data set in the cloud, this includes Dropbox and OneDrive. Doing so could result in data corruption.

See https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479948922020-01-10T20:14:38Z2020-01-10T20:14:38ZMoneydance - file sharing

I'm a fellow user.

File sharing like you describe was used in older versions of Moneydance. It was not a wholly satisfactory approach because of limitations in personal computing platforms. One of the most significant is that files cannot be truly shared, only one user at a time can have them open, otherwise there is the real risk of corruption and there is no way to stop more than one user at a time having them open because there is no file locking mechanism let alone a mechanism that could lock a portion or a file or individual records to allow for multi-user access on one of the operating systems that Moneydance supports let alone across them.

The syncing mechanism was introduced to overcome the problems inherent within the platforms as well as across the platforms. The method used to write the data is tailored to do it in such a way as to facilitate syncing and make it efficient, however that method does not functions well when you store the data on any sort of network drive due to things like the overheads involved in network usage and the latency incurred. There are no significant downsides to the method Moneydance is using if you are just a standalone user.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479948922020-01-10T22:38:45Z2020-01-10T22:38:46ZMoneydance - file sharing

Hi folks,

Two really good answers that are greatly appreciated. Very well explained (particularly from dwg) that provided the technical rationale.

Needless to say I’ll not be placing the main files in a shared environment !

Thanks again for taking the time to provide such good answers.

Good to hear you are not placing your files on a shared location, I think we would have had to shoot you if you had - that is the only humane solution :)

dwg
