Issue:
Several years ago, my wife was a Real Estate agent, and I ran a small computer consulting business. As a consequence, we had created categories specifically related to various and sundry business expenses.

Now the two of us have retired and I want to "retire" those expense categories and I want to exclude them from being used for future transactions. I do not want to remove them, because they are important to properly account and categorize historical data.

The behavior I would like to see is; if a transaction would normally use a category within "Real Estate", it does not - that category is now unavailable for (at least) automagic categorization. It should either allow the transaction to be un-categorized, give it a "default" category, or ask for the category to use.

Is this possible?

jimrhtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/482044582020-04-01T10:12:05Z2020-04-01T10:12:05ZHow to exclude certain categories, (or category groups), from being used in future transactions?

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi jimrh

Have you tried TOOLS – CATEGORIES highlight a category you want to make inactive, double click and tick the INACTIVE box?

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/482044582020-04-01T10:23:46Z2020-04-01T10:23:48ZHow to exclude certain categories, (or category groups), from being used in future transactions?

&*%$#@!!! it all!

I was looking everywhere but the right place. Let me go try that.

Thanks!

jimrhtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/482044582020-04-01T10:27:58Z2020-04-01T10:27:59ZHow to exclude certain categories, (or category groups), from being used in future transactions?

Oops!

Just checked, and I already did that. They still automagically categorize into a category regardless of its inactive status.

jimrhtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/482044582020-04-01T10:34:21Z2020-04-01T10:34:21ZHow to exclude certain categories, (or category groups), from being used in future transactions?

I'm a fellow user.

That is true because Moneydance uses an algorithm based on previous transactions to assign the current transaction. In theory if you change it to what is now required, over time it will learn the new correlation. Personally I prefer to take a shortcut.

The first way would be to use a slightly different description moving forward. The other way would be to use say the Find and Replace extension to change the description on older transactions e.g. change Rent to Office Rent.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/482044582020-04-01T10:49:54Z2020-04-01T10:50:45ZHow to exclude certain categories, (or category groups), from being used in future transactions?

What I had done is to create a business expense: Real Estate - Auto Fuel

Now I want to use the expense Household - Auto Fuel.

Despite my best efforts, and spending a considerable time last year re-categorizing everything in sight, Moneydance flat out INSISTS that these transactions are Real Estate transactions. Come Hell or high water.

In Quicken, (sorry for using bad language ), I could go to all my automagic classification rules, find these payees in bulk, and re-classify them within the rule. After that, they'd classify correctly.

jimrhtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/482044582020-04-01T11:01:34Z2020-04-01T11:01:34ZHow to exclude certain categories, (or category groups), from being used in future transactions?

Quicken uses stored rules, Moneydance does not it determines matches on the fly. If the payee/description is slighly different it should not use the old category as that is what the software would be using to suggest the category, but the difference needs to be at the start of the Payee/Description otherwise it is unwieldy

dwg
