Printing

Hi,

It seems like I am getting closer to using Moneydance. I was able to import, I think, my data from Quicken. I have looked at the file in Notes and also on the reports from Moneydance. There are many balances and figures that make no sense. I tried printing a few reports to check the figures out.

Now my problem is that I am not able to print from Moneydance. I am using a Chromebook which runs Moneydance with the help of Linux. This may be a factor in this problem, I print this using the cloud.

Any help with getting me printing will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

    Hi Tom,

You could try this as a work around…..

Instead of clicking Print, click Save instead. Opt to save your report as HTML. You will need to give the file a name & add the .html extension.

Open the HTML file in any web browser.

If you use the Chrome Web Browser when you select Print > More Settings you will be able to resize, change the margins, layout & scale to your hearts content. Chrome seams to be the most versatile in this respect.

I would be interested to know which Chromebook you are using, as I am thinking if buying one soon & I understand not all of them can run Linux

    Hope this helps,

    Hello Tom,

The above suggestion should be a good workaround. We honestly don't have a lot of experience printing through Chromebooks. If you could describe exactly how it's not working when you try to print (do you get any error messages, etc), that could be helpful.

    Good morning Ethan,

When I tried to print I do not get any error messages. Nothing appears to
happen. However, several hours later I was printing from another app and
the first page that came out was printed from Moneydance. It printed only
two lines, the first line shows the menu bar and then parts of it appear as
if it was printed over many times. The second line showed "highlight text"
surrounded by a border and to the right of that it shows "page 4 of 24".

Today I will try the workaround suggested by Jeff, I will let you know how
    it goes.

    Hello Tom,

That's very strange. I'll forward this to our developers, but my guess is that this has something to do with how Moneydance, and maybe Java programs generally, interact with ChromeOS. It was only relatively recently that one could run Moneydance on those systems at all, and I imagine things like printing are significantly different. The workaround should work though, regardless of your operating system, as long as you can send the data to a program you know can print already.

I continue to have the problem printing. Or I should say not printing. I tried the workaround suggested by Jeff but it did not work either.

By the way Jeff, you mentioned you are considering getting a Chromebook bit you want to get one that can run Linux. I have an ASUS C434 T and it rocks. I love it. I feel confident that the problem I am having with printing is not Linux related.

I am thinking about uninstalling Linux and Moneydance and starting again. Perhaps by deactivating Linux and reactivating it I may get different results after I reinstall Moneydance. We'll see.

Before you so that, check your CUPS install. A lot of printer problems
is how that particular piece of software was installed and then its
slection of the printer driver (just got a Raspberry Pi 2B, and
    surprised that CUPS was _not_installed.

Which program did you open the saved report data in? Was it a program that can otherwise print? It would be very strange for that to be the case, as from that program's perspective, it should just be printing a normal compatible file. There shouldn't be any interaction between Moneydance and that program or printing.

    Hi Ethan,

I tried saving a file and also printing from a few different places. I
tried the Net Worth, Account Balance, and two others which now I don't
remember. The print option does not do anything as far as I can tell. The
Save option did create a HTML file. However, as hard as I tried I could not
access the file to try to print it.

At this point I have deactivated Linux beta which uninstalled it and
unexpected by me Moneydance also got deleted.

Needless to say, I am at a total loss as to what to do next. I very much
would like to use Moneydance but I have to be able to print. Any
    suggestions?

I am thinking of going ahead and starting Linux, once it installs I will
    download Moneydance and install it.

Do you see any problem with doing this? Should I wait to see if you get
some feedback from the developers to whom you submitted the problem? Or,
should I do what I don't want to do and give up on Moneydance?

Please let me know your thoughts.

    Hi Tom,

Surely you can’t think of dumping MD ‘cos you can’t print! Can you not drop out of Linux & print your saved HTML file in Chrome OS.

Did a little research & found the link below that you may or may not have seen. It would appear that printing from Linux within ChromeOS is not straight forward but can be done. It would appear that it’s nothing to do with MD, no program would print without some additional configuration.

Hope this helps whilst you are waiting for an Official reply!

    Hi Tom,

I don't see any harm in reinstalling Linux at this point, but I'm not sure if that's going to solve underlying printing issues. I am curious though in light of the previous comment by Jeff if you could print from other Linux programs at all.

I'm also not quite sure why the HTML file workaround didn't work for you. Could you explain that in more detail? The HTML file that Moneydance produces is so basic that I'd imagine that any web browser made in the last two decades should be able to open it, so it's unclear to me why you wouldn't be able to do that. Or were you able to, but couldn't print from the web browser? If so, that does suggest a greater printing issue with Linux programs that goes beyond Moneydance.

    Hi Jeff,

The problem is that I am not able to find files when I "drop out of Linux". This could be a software issue, I suspect Linux, or an issue with my ignorance of Linux.  I have never used it before and I really don't want to start learning it at this stage in my life. I've had enough programing, operating systems, etc. to last me for my remaining years. As a matter of fact I am also new to Chrome OS. But, I made the commitment to get away from Windows so I am devoting the time to learn the ins and outs of this OS.

Thank you for the link you sent. I have already been there and tried the suggested instructions. It does not work with the Linux version that comes in the chromebook. The name of it is "Debian", version 10.

I hope something gets figured out as I would like very much to use MD.

    Thanks,

    Tom

Ps. The only progress I made on my last attempt was that a message indicating that "no print environment exists" popped up. ??

    Hi Ethan,

To my knowledge, I don't have any other Linux app installed. I do print

I am sure the HTML file work around would work if I could get to it with
the browser. I just can not find it much less get to the file. I search
local storage as well as the Google Cloud with no luck. In my test I am
able to create the HTML file in a location I browse to, I am not sure if
the location is within MD file structure or Linux, nonetheless I can not
get to it with the browser.

As I mentioned to Jeff before, the last time I tested I did get a pop up
indicating there was no print environment. I am assuming it was a Linux
generated pop up but it could have been from MD, I don't know.

    Hi Tom --

I think your issue has to do with the installation of printer drivers
with your ChromeOS. Included with the "standard" installation is the
ability to print through the Cloud but printing "locally" needs a bit
more work. You will need to install or activate your Wifi printer or
install CUPS and then configure the printer, either directly connected
or over your wifi. Just be aware that not all printers are covered by
the release of CUPS for your device, especially HP. There you will need
to install HPLIP from the same repository for your OS as to where you
downloaded and installed the CUPS driver.

If you are unfamiliar with doing this, let me know and I will forward
some curated instructions that might help.

    Hi Tom C --

I hope that I can help you a bit, although I do not have a ChromeOS
computer (alas, mine is an old Chromebook that I periodically figure out
how to put a LINUX (crostini and its ilk) on it!). I think it is pretty
straight forward, from my research and undestanding as to what Google
    has done.

    I would try this first:
    https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/7225252?hl=en

That would be my first/simplest try, and hope that they have your
printer. I think there is an option for a default printer, otherwise.
