Without changing current file/syncing?

I'd like to open an old *.md file from... say 2007ish, without messing with my current file? I'm now running 2019.3(1880) on MacOS 10.15.3. Details -

When I open Moneydance, there is no File->Close option to close my existing file.

If I choose file->open other from the Moneydance menu, the old *.md files are greyed out, and unselectable.

If I close Moneydance, then locate the *.md file in finder, and right-click to open with Moneydance, then Moneydance starts by opening with my regular file, and asks me if I want to convert & add the *.md file to my 'library'. I don't want to add anything to my existing file at this point so...?

I also don't want to interfere with my Dropbox syncing when I open the old file

I think that's it... help? I thought it would take me 2 secs to just look at some old stuff...
TIA

superslackertag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483724952020-05-30T20:53:49Z2020-05-30T20:53:49ZHow to open an old .md file? Without changing current file/syncing?

Hello,

I think the main issue you're running into is that the file format changed from .md to .moneydance starting with the 2012 version. To open a .md file in any version since 2012, the program will first need to convert the older file to the newer file format, then display the data.

The right-clicking method you were using should work. You can also choose the .md file by using the open other option from the Moneydance welcome screen or the menu bar (File -> Open -> Open Other) to select your .md data file. In either case, you will be asked if you want to convert the file, or convert and import it to your library. Both options will make a .moneydance file from your .md file. Adding it to your library means it will move the file it creates to the default file location (https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/file-locations-and-changes/de...), and will move the .md file to your archive folder. In either case, it does not mean it will change your existing main data file in any way; it only creates a new .moneydance data file with your .md file name, and displays that new file. When you are done with your older data file, you can simply use the File -> Open window to return to your main data file.

I can't think of any way that opening an older data file from the .md format would interfere with your existing syncing data. Even if you were syncing with that older file, it had to have been through the older Network Synchronizer extension, which doesn't run on the newer versions. The syncing system has gone through a few major changes since whatever pre-2012 version your data file was created with. Even if it tried to connect with Dropbox somehow, it wouldn't have your syncing password, which was only created in later versions, so it wouldn't be able to access that data.

If you'd like to be absolutely sure, there's never any harm in making a backup of your data file before trying anything (File -> Export Backup).
