Categories are global across all accounts in the data set. You can create whatever categories you want however and use them with a specific account if needed, you just cannot prevent them being visible and usable to other accounts.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484247572020-06-24T22:29:19Z2021-09-06T17:48:08Zhandlng credit cards

thanks, that is what I was afraid of-- one place where quicken has a better idea--

If someone wanted to maintain both business and personal data with the software for example I may suggest they look at having separate data sets and really keeping the data apart, if on the other hand they just have an employer provided credit card this may well be overkill and probably not needed, a single default category may suffice, if on the other hand you have to provide a detail spending report then you would need multiple categories, then it could come down to whether to do it in a data set mixed in with all the personal accounts or whether it is easier and/or simpler to create its own independent data set.

Like I said it comes down to circumstances.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484247572020-06-24T22:49:27Z2020-06-24T22:49:27Zhandlng credit cards

I had Quicken Home and Business, and when I moved to MD, I changed the category names for the business to Business:Category 1 etc. - (I didn't change any personal names as that felt like overkill.)

But then whenever I did a business credit card or cash transaction, I'd always type bus to bring up those categories, and just made sure I had no personal categories that began with "bus".

I also renamed my business credit cards to start with B-credit card to get them all in the same "space" (actually ZB- as I wanted them at the bottom)

Hope that helps in some way.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484247572020-06-24T23:06:01Z2021-09-06T17:48:08Zhandlng credit cards

thanks for the information .the data set has me curious what I have is a situation where the credit cards are paid off ea. month. I am using them only for keeping track of categories for tax purposeThanks again for your hesI have several houses and need to keep track of expenditures for each property and I use a credit card for purchasesI guess I'd like a definition of your data set and how do i set it up.Sorry to be so dense but it seems everything is different and I need to get used to it...Thanks again for your help

My main journey was creating a QIF file that would transfer all my Quicken data over, then altering category names to fit a business/personal/old: concept. That way, I could segment categories and reports. I'd then rename my accounts to fit more closely the old quicken structure, simply by using alphabetic characters to sort them the way it used to be.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484247572020-06-24T23:16:23Z2020-06-24T23:16:23Zhandlng credit cards

Think of a Data Set as being the equivalent of a file in most software. So you can have separate files for different things all completely independent of each other. In Quicken your data comprises about 5 files if I remember correctly but the main one contains all of the required data and has a QDF extension, the other files support this file and can be recreated. In Quicken you can create multiple QDF files all independent.

The reason for referring to them as data sets is that with Moneydance all the data is not held in a single file it is stored in multiple files in a folder structure, so you can have many individual files but as a whole they form your data. So all of the files are important and the folder structure itself is also important.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484247572020-06-26T00:08:31Z2021-09-06T17:48:09Zhandlng credit cards

is there someplace where i can study up on them and figure how to use themwhat it looks like to me is I have the complete list of categories showing in either split window
