Hi

My quotes are not updating my Security/stock prices. It stopped updating a month ago and I have checked all the obvious options without success. Exchange rates update but the securities get an error message 'Error downloading...no data found'. I have run the Test but just get X History X.

Any help most welcomed

I believe this is the result of Yahoo shutting down their Yahoo Finance API. I suspect the service finally went kaput today after being announced as such back in May.

Yahoo seems to have a problem 2-3 times a year. It's usually fixed the next morning. I've been wondering how long this service was going to continue. I don't understand why the downloader uses only Yahoo and not offering a broader selection. Sometime in the last year or so IK added Goggle Finance to the Historical selection but not to the current quote selection. I tried turning off the current choice and changing Historical to Google. That gave me some more quotes but not the complete selection I usually get.

jonh - Both Yahoo and Google offered free downloads of quote data through a little unknown API available on their websites. My impression is that these APIs were not intended for widespread use by commercial products like Moneydance, bu instead, were provided for individual investor use. As such, Google elected to terminate their service some time prior to this year and Verizon decided to terminate Yahoo's service after buying the company. If you search the internet, you'll see that other companies are charging a fee for this service.

This is the same problem about which I just started a new thread... sorry! But John F's reply sounds as if MD will no longer be able to obtain quotes from Yahoo. Is that correct?

Posted the following in another post.

There was an old previous post that said Yahoo was stopping access to their Quote API.

So I guess it has finally stopped completely.

The only work around I have found is installing the Security Price Entry extension.
If you do not have a lot of securities then this might work for you until they find a replacement.

I did a test of this by only entering prices to only those securities I have in my portfolio.
It is a shame it lists all securities even old ones.
Those you do not own just leave those blank.

Before doing it make sure you backup MD just in case you mess up.

FYI: I also uninstall the Quote updater.

Thank you, JL. I have a portfolio set up on My Yahoo and can obtain current security prices there (20 minute delay, I guess), exporting them as a .csv file. That's easy to import into Quicken; maybe there's a way to use it with MD.

It would nice if someone from MD to pop in and say something.
Maybe someone here has an email to Sean or anyone at MD to make sure they are aware of this problem.
Not a good way to keep and communicate with users.

That said, I do wish there was a way to import a csv into MD quotes module instead of using the extension.

It certainly looks like AlphaVantage would work. I'm happy obtaining my own (free) API key.

    Hi Jim,

I tried getting a quote (csv) for a Fidelity mutual fund, ticker FAGIX using the AlphaVantage API. It's last quote was for 10/31/2017.

We'll have to see if they can provide quotes for November and beyond. However, if they (AV) are getting their quotes from Yahoo, well then...

Indeed. I've been using it for more than a decade, automatically downloading to .csv. Then end of an era, here is reply (probably a smoke screen by Verizon) found on yahoo.uservoice.com where may folks are screaming in distress.....

The extension has 'historical quotes' from Google. I tried that yesterday without much luck, using a date range 01Nov->01Nov. I'm wondering exactly how that part of the extension is supposed to work.

If it's true that Moneydance was relying on the Yahoo API for free updates without authorization that is disappointing but understandable. This makes Moneydance worthless for my purposes but it can be easily fixed by modifying the Security Price Input extension to accept CSV files or clipboard pastes. We can then get the stock prices from Google or Yahoo for the stock prices we want; I get those anyway for my own use in a spreadsheet. Both Yahoo and Google allow private users to set up portfolios; that's where I get the prices I can input to the Moneydance extension if it were changed to accept them from a CSV file or clipboard paste. Let me know if I can help.

A simple alternative to a CSV import through the Security Price Input extension would be the existing File | Import feature. Moneydance can add the Stock table to the Account list as a receiver of the CSV file. Let me know if I can help.

This is interesting. I'll see if I can find the right place. I liked the prior download api cause I emailed it do myself and didn't have to fire up the browser and log on to a site full of blazing advert's. Maybe I can set up a portfolio populated with 1 share of each holding. Are you manually inputing from the data you get or does one of these extensions allow input from a .csv or paste? I have never looked at the extensions carefully.

Moneydance does allow you to import prices from a CSV file but it is on a security by security bases, I suspect the extension was using this capability as I think the Yahoo API was only downloading one price at a time in any case.

FWIW a fellow user has created an extension to load security prices from a CSV file see:

dwg's suggestion above is the best solution (hopefully temporary) I've found so far to this problem. It was pretty painless to build my portfolio on my Yahoo account--I only have about 15 securities and it only took a few minutes, but once done it's done. Then it's a simple matter of exporting to csv from the Yahoo portfolio, then using the extension he linked to. Almost as painless as the currently defunct updater extension, just a couple of quick steps to get it done.

    Follow this link:

    https://bitbucket.org/mikerb/moneydance-2015/downloads/

Download the extension at the bottom right to a known location on your local drive, then in MD extension menu at bottom left 'add from file', browse to the saved extension file and install. Run the extension using the instructions at this link:

    https://bitbucket.org/mikerb/moneydance-2015/wiki/Security%20Price%...

If you need more details just ask.
