Quotes not updating
Hi
My quotes are not updating my Security/stock prices. It stopped updating a month ago and I have checked all the obvious options without success. Exchange rates update but the securities get an error message 'Error downloading...no data found'. I have run the Test but just get X History X.
Any help most welcomed

Mike's extension appears that it only works with Moneydance 2015 or newer. I have 2014.5. Please correct me if I am wrong and you are able to run his extension with 2014.5. Thanks.
Right now I am manually entering end of day price data using the Security Price Entry extension. I have a Google sheet with the symbols as they are ordered the same as in the Security Price Entry extension, using the =googlefinance() function to display the current pricing. Unfortunately I cannot cut and paste this column direction into the Security Price Entry extension.
Mike's csv extension or my method above are all just klooges. I am hoping a real solution is soon at hand, even if I have to update.

Mmmm, sorry, that's all I can offer. Yeah, they need to do something--I just started using MD a few weeks ago but I thought this was a potential problem early on. Guess they didn't plan far enough ahead. Since there's been little to no response from IK on this, my guess is they're huddled in the war room....at least I hope so. :-)

They need to do something, because I need that functionality and if it goes, so do I.

No worries Dan. I am hoping that some other 2014.5 user has had better luck.
As stated above, if I could cut and paste the Google Sheet prices directly into the Security Price Entry extension, it would actually be quite quick to update.
And, playing with the =googlefinance() function in Google Sheets has taught me a few things. I can get the current price and historical data directly in the spreadsheet fields and import into MD without too much work.

Can you tell us more about the googlefinance() function? What's the
formatting of the spreadsheet that you import?

@dwg
Thanks for info on Mikeb. It works very well except for one problem. I had to restore from backup because the default date is dd/mm/yyyy. My system is USA style mm/dd/yyyy. So I see I can change the date at the top of the form, but in my first run through it didn't work right and the quotes ended up in Feb rather than today.
I have to try this a few more times so that I get the hang of it.
For anyone else reading here, make sure you BACKUP and you know where your backup is located. I just spent 20 minutes looking for the auto-backup that MD2017 creates on closing. And then I saved it to a new location to protect it. Every time you close MD on the same day it overwrites the prior backup.
97 Posted by jonh on 03 Nov, 2017 01:53 AM
Regarding my prior post about the date of the "Security Price Loader", the date is merely a display on the form. If I click on the date, the pop-up calendar shows today's date, the date at top remains formatted for dd/mm/yyyy. Allow the form to save does correctly place the quote as today's date.
When using this extension, select all securities at once with the little check box below the last security in the list. I missed this the first time around.
I do note that if you check the history of a security, this extension does not include volume so a security is saved as zero volume. Too bad mikeb could not make extra info available.
Having finally done it correctly it is very nice and I tip my hat to @mikeb for writing it and to @dwg for mentioning it.

Hi Dan, Thanks for this but I am little dumb on this - does one have to create the .csv manually by getting the prices online and completing a spreadsheet to then export as a .csv file and then use this ‘extension’ to load that data into MD ? Unfortunately Mike's description referenced by Dan does not make the whole process needed to be done very clear.
Thanks

I am a 2015.3 user, and my app stopped updating securities prices on November 1. It must have bee the stroke of midnight, because I got good data late the night before, and nothing the afternoon of the 1st.

Hi Ray,
Yes. The .csv file may be garnered from your brokerage's website e.g. Fidelity.com or maybe through a user-defined Yahoo or Google Portfolio.
Once you have the .csv, you can load it into the extension and subsequently into Moneydance.
It works quite well. kudos to Mike Bray.

Only issue with the extension discussed above is that is doesn't work in 2014 versions as noted by @ATucker.
102 Posted by dwg on 03 Nov, 2017 03:10 AM
Try the older version on MD2014 and earlier:

I'm trying to reach the developer of the Security Price Entry extension. Changing that
extension to allow it to upload a CSV file with the stock prices would fix the problem.
As I understand it Yahoo and Google no longer allow API access to their service
which makes sense. They make their money from ads and APIs, being machine interfaces, can't read ads. Fortunately, Yahoo and Google do allow us to create portfolios and download them to CSV files since we can read ads. If we can then upload that CSV file to Moneydance the problem is solved. Hopefully I will hear back from the developer soon. Attached is a Yahoo CSV portfolio file.

Sorry, here's the Yahoo CSV file.

Have just updated 47 security prices for 11/02/17 using the extension "Security Price Loader" developed by Mike Bray and referenced in several previous messages, and wanted to report that it works beautifully! Took about an hour to understand, install, and set up. The actual import was instantaneous, and the results perfect. Future imports, imcluding creating the .csv file from Yahoo Finance, should take less than five minutes. Thanks to all who helped with this solution!

Regarding the extension by Mike Bray, he notes that it is not IK approved and, visiting
his website, I see no activity at all this year so support is questionable, at best. He also
notes that his extension is for 2015 Moneydance which raises further questions about
support. Until I see a solution from IK I am updating stock prices manually by clicking
on the stock name in the Stock Prices list.
However, I defer to Ed who is more trusting than I and will follow his lead.
107 Posted by joe.bachofen on 03 Nov, 2017 06:43 AM
Just followed Ed's lead and I agree, "Security Price Loader" does what I need and does
it well. Now I would just urge IK to bring it in house so it can be supported.
108 Posted by Peter on 03 Nov, 2017 07:14 AM
Does anyone have a solution that works with multiple currencies? I can import the CSV files, but Moneydance does a currency conversion, so the numbers are meaningless. I have tried changing my base currency for each currency type, but the data still gets screwed up.
Moneydance is proving to be a poorly supported package. Might be time for a change!
109 Posted by ehknapp3 on 03 Nov, 2017 07:42 AM
Joe,
I should have noted that I'm using MD 2017, so it works in that version too. The ability to update security prices is very important to me -- it was the main reason I switched from Quicken -- I will (reluctantly) forgo any future MD update which does not have this feature. So support should not be necessary (for me). But I agree, best if IK brings this in house, unless they have a better solution. Note that so far support from IK has been nonexistent, not even an acknowledgement of the problem nor assurance that they are working on it.
And I guess I am more trusting than many, but sometimes it works out.

The API in Moneydance was changed for the 2015 version of the product, hence older extensions work with MD2014 and earlier releases, Extensions using the new API work with MD2015 and MD2017.
The older version of the extension is giving me problems in MD2012, the first screen is coming up and allow selections (even reading in the header line) but the second window is not displaying
111 Posted by Noname on 03 Nov, 2017 11:54 AM
While I appreciate everyone's input as to how to work around this problem, I am very disappointed that no one from IK support has weighed in. There are now numerous threads regarding this issue in the forum and I haven't seen an IK response to any of them. As stated in some earlier posts, IK was aware that Yahoo was going to discontinue the service and should have been preparing for this. I have been a Moneydance user since the mid-2000s but will reluctantly begin searching for a new program as downloading prices is very important to me and I'm not comfortable trying unsupported extensions or manipulating CSV files. But again, most disappointing to me is the lack of response from IK support.

Hi Des,
I had a similar issue with a Fidelity CSV file where the second window of the Security Price Load extension would not appear. For me, it turned out that I had to format the 'Last Price' column of the CSV file to 'Number' so as to remove the $ dollar sign.

Hi All,
There's a response from MD support staffer Jenny on another thread.

Hi Kevin,
I slept on the problem I'm having and this morning pulled out a test machine with MD2017 on it and immediately had the same problem, stripped it down to only having two columns and it works
Now to work back and see what it doesn't like. Its a bit strange as it is quite a clean CSV file no dollar signs with numbers, no thousand separators so it would seem to have none of the "usual" problems.
I have high. low and volume data in my download so it is a shame Mike's extension cannot load this as well.

Des: FWIW, here is a snippet of my situation. Created portfolio at Yahoo and took it down to 2 columns, price & time. Use export widget in upper right of page, gives me .cvs file of my 38 quotes. However, the .csv contains all of the data. Here is the first 2 entries, the lines are wrapped and note that there is no '$' sign:
Symbol,Current Price,Date,Time,Change,Open,High,Low,Volume,Trade Date,Purchase Price,Quantity,Commission,High Limit,Low Limit,Comment
AAPL,172.5,2017/11/03,16:00 EDT,4.3899994,174.0,174.24,171.12,57191620,,,,,,,
T,33.3,2017/11/03,16:04 EDT,0.13000107,33.34,33.39,32.95,40227070,,,,,,,
I'm going to wait a few more hours before I put this into MD, I have to wait for the mutual funds to update. It all worked fine last night and I'll find out in a few hours how it goes.
I don't know if any of this is useful or not.
I agree that it's a shame the extension is limited to 2 fields, I would like to see it configurable.

Hi Jonh,
On my brokers web site I can setup what they refer to as watch lists and download these as CSVs. What I end up with is not dissimilar:
Name, Code, Bid($), Offer($), Last($), Change ($), Change (%), Open($), High($), Low($), Volume
Own 1,QAN,6.210,6.230,6.210,-.010,-.16,6.240,6.300,6.210,4694463
Own 1,SGM,13.400,13.410,13.410,.080,.60,13.520,13.710,13.360,546912
I'm wary of Yahoo's ToC's hence would not like to have an account with them, I trust them about as far as I can throw them (and my back is playing up :) )
I'll play round with what I have for a while to see what the extension object to, if I have to write a bit of code to fix it then so be it, had to put together a nasty bit of perl code to get something Quicken would accept
Thanks for the thought.

Hi Des,
Copying your posted data 'as is' to a csv file imports as expected using Mikes importer with MD 2012.5 (866)
I suspect that there may be some obscured text in one of your columns that Excel could be hiding.
Have you tried opening your csv in a simple word processor to see if it reveals anythng?

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for getting me thinking.
I took the file into LibreOffice Write and turned on all field markings.
You look at the file and there is not a thing out of place, no strange characters, it looks like a good file BUT right at the bottom of the file you have you last line of data with their CrLf character but on the very next line there is a CrLf all on its own, remove this and the extension behaves. It looks like the extension must have every line in an identical layout and what is effectively a blank line throws it.
Thanks for the help

Jeff Carpenter: Sorry for the late reply. See a good explanation of the googlefinance() function from Google Sheets here:
https://business.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-track-stock-data-in-google-sheets-with-googlefinance-function--cms-28182
If the Security Price Entry extension allowed one to cut and paste, it would be easy to update daily using Google Sheets.

@dwg "I'm wary of Yahoo's ToC's hence would not like to have an account with them, I trust them about as far as I can throw them "
I certainly understand that, I went that route because I've had an account there for yahoogroups since the late '90's. Since the portfolio setup is not asking for quantity I figured there is very little that is revealed. It was so much better when I could use the api and just get it delivered w/o going to the site.
I noticed that the source code (java) is posted at the site where the extension is available. Should make it fairly easy to fix your cr/lf issue.
