I think the answer to your question is yes. Look at a section of one of my Asset Allocation Reports. You can see the securities are grouped by type and subtype. Each security have a value, a percentage of “Type” and a percentage of the “Total”.
You can download the free trial version and experiment with the program. The demo version is fully functional and allows you to manually enter 100 transactions. Imported transactions are not limited, so you'll be able to fully test downloading data from your bank, and importing data from other personal finance software.
If you decide to purchase the program at a later date you can keep all your data, the license key simply unlocks the ability to manually enter more transactions. You can download the trial version of Moneydance from http://infinitekind.com/download-moneydance-personal-finance-software
You'll find the Moneydance knowledge base articles here http://help.infinitekind.com/kb which will be useful if you're using Moneydance for the first time.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/430350072017-07-19T20:42:39Z2018-09-11T09:39:02ZInvestment categories

thanks derekkent! this looks like what i am trying to achieve - presumably you specified the categories shown yourself, as sub-types, which is what i hope to do e.g. Mutual Europe ex Uk and Mutual Global Emerging Markets? Those don't appear to be standard categories shown in the manual

rodwhdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/430350072017-07-20T07:05:15Z2017-07-20T07:05:15ZInvestment categories

I am not support staff, just a user.

For each security you can select a Type, Stock, Mutual, CD, Bond, Stock option, Ohers from a fixed list, see picture below. Once you have selected the type the available entries change to a list relevant to the security type you select. For each Security Type you can also add a Subtype. Importantly by clicking on Edit next to Subtype you can add any text you like adding as many Subtype as you need.

stocks across different accounts, so i often want to view and print my
investments by stock(security) rather than by investment account e.g. want
to see how many Amazon shares and the value that I own in total, not split
into separate accounts. The report Portfolio appears to give me this Edit
option, but when I select Portfolio/Edit/Show by type/All security, it
still displays and prints out the stocks separated into Investment
accounts. The Moneydance support guy has suggested I use Extensions and set
up extra Investment Reports, and design my own report there, but its very
complicated and I haven't worked it out yet. Is there a simpler way? In my
old Quicken 20002 its a core option to view a portfolio investments either
subtotalled by Account, or by security

Have never wonted to report by Security, but can see it could be useful.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/430350072017-07-26T11:34:56Z2017-07-26T11:34:56ZInvestment categories

Hi Ron,

Using the 'Portfolio' report, you can select "Show: By Individual" on the right of the settings screen. You can then choose which securities you'd like to report on (rather than All Securities), allowing you to run a report for each specific security. However, these reports will still be subtotaled by each account.
If you're having trouble creating reports using the extension, you can create a new discussion that includes screenshots of the settings you're using. I'd be happy to provide guidance and assistance so you can generate the data you need.
