entering an existing 401k into moneydance

I have an existing 401k account i'm trying to start tracking in Moneydance. Moneydance is able to import the last 6 months or so of transactions, but not any of the balances of the funds. I tried to manually enter a starting balance to work around this, but that REALLY messed things up. Is there ANY more graceful way to go about importing account balances for investments that i'm missing?

    Hi Dan,

There's two ways that you can go about this that I can think of off hand.

Manually enter each transaction from the start of the 401(k) plan from past statements. (probably not a fun thing).

Enter a fictitious Buy transaction (txn) for each of the holdings in the plan so that they reconcile with the current number of shares of each holding.

As you're entering these txns you will likely sustain a large negative Cash Balance. Disregard the Cash Balance until all of the fictitious Buy txns are entered and all of the share balances are correct.

You can then enter/edit the 'Initial Balance' of the account so that it too reconciles with the cash holdings in the account. (if any).

This is not an ideal solution as it will skew the performance history of your holdings but it may be the best option unless the plan is not too far along. In that case, the first option may serve you better.
