i am manually entering investment transactions from quicken to get started with moneydance.

Your user guide does not explain the steps to go through to enter capital gains. I expected to enter a split transaction in the register, but splits are only available in the bank register.

Do you have a simple set of instructions for a sample sale of shares that enables me to track the capital gain or loss on the transaction?

For example: Buy 100 shares XYZ for $5/share = $500
Sell 100 shares XYZ for $10/share = $1000 (500 basis and 500 gain)

Try entering the buy transaction, then entering the sell then try generating a Capital gains report, the report should exist in the left hand side bar or you can select it via the tools menu, you may need the edit it the report to select appropriate parameters for the report

Thanks! The date range in the capital gains report didn't pick up the
transaction, so wasn't showing anything. Once I fixed that, it appeared by
    magic!

    All sorted.

    Your Welcome.

The provided reports are basically templates and do not automatically pick up dates from the transactions, you can memorize reports with selected dates or with dates like "Last Fiscal Year". Memorized "Last Fiscal Year" reports are useful for helping with Tax Returns.

Nice part of the world Terrigal but you may want to edit your post to remove your contacts details.
