Stock price updater
The quotes and exchange rate extention seems to have stopped working. I was told I needed to update to the latest version of Moneydance, so I've done that and it still doesn't work. What do I do?

Hi Paul,
What version and build number of Moneydance are you using? (Menu bar > Help > About Moneydance)
e.g MD 2017.6 (1656)
What build number of the Quotes and Exchange Rates updater extension are you using? (Menu bar > Extensions > Manage Extensions > Q&ER updater)
e.g. v.1012
Did you purchase Moneydance through the Moneydance website?

Thanks Kevin.
I’m using Moneydance version 2017.6 (1656)
Q&ER updater version 1012
Yes, I bought Moneydance direction from the Moneydance website.

Hi Paul,
When you install v.1012 of the Q&ER updater, you should be prompted to get a free, API key from AlphaVantage and you're provide with a field to enter it.
Did you do so?

That doesn’t sound familiar. Can I remove it and reinstall and see if that happens?

Hi Paul,
Yes, I would suggest you give that a try.

I removed and reinstalled it. But it didn’t prompt me for any key. How can I get that key and what do I do with it once I have it?

Hi Paul,
I'm afraid that I'm not sure how to proceed from here.
I will yield to the Moneydance support staff to help you further.
Sorry that I couldn't be of more help but without the prompt and subsequent API key, the Q&ER updater will not retrieve your quotes.
If you are interested, there is a free, third-party app called hleofxquotes that can create a QIF file or CSV file that can be imported into Moneydance to update your quotes. It's what I use instead of the Q&ER updater. Forum member derekkent23 posted information about it here.

The new Quotes and Exchange Rates is available in Moneydance via Extensions --> Manage Extensions. You'll see an 'Update' button next to the extension name.
The new extension pulls data from https://Alphavantage.co which is a free service that specifically provides an API for people and apps to retrieve prices for exchange rates and security prices.
When using the updated extension for the first time, you should select Alpha Vantage as the source. You’ll then be prompted to visit the Alpha Vantage site to claim an API key. This may be the step you're missing. You can then enter the key into Moneydance to begin downloading your prices and rates.

Ethan and Kevin, thanks very much. That seems to have worked. I was able to get an API key and found the place to select Alpha Vantage as the source. Cheers! :-)

I have downloaded the extension and got the API key from Alpha Advantage and my automatic stock quotes don't come through, error coming up as per below.
Error while downloading currency exchange rates:sun.security.validator. Validator exception No trusted certificate found

You also need Moneydance 2017.6 as a minimum, the error you are reporting would seem to indicate you are running an older version.

I also had this issue. I am using the latest 2017.6 and the latest exchange rate. I tried to do a historical download using the drop menus of Security Prices and select Google Finance - History Only. I try the Set API Key, and it shows the one for AlphaVantage. No option for Google. I get mostly the error forbidden. The result is 151 securities skipped, 19 errors, and 19 quotes obtained. It may be working but not sure why it reports the error.
When I use the AlphaVantage, I get 151 securities skipped, 0 errors, and 19 quotes obtained. I only have 19 selected to update, so it appears it is finally working for the Alphavantage.
Your knowledge base article needs to be updated as it still shows the Yahoo connection to update stocks.

Same problem. I have the latest Moneydance and the latest Securities updater and it stopped working a few days ago.

Still not working. Is there anyone from Infinite Kind support staff that's working on this?
I have the latest Moneydance on the Mac 2017.6(1656) and I'm very frustrated.

I am having the same issues updating stocks and no answer from my post last week. i am running High Sierra, Java 1.8, and the latest MD 2017.7 (1663)......some of my stocks update and some do not using AlphaVantage. This is getting very frustrating.

Same issue here, some update and some do not. Very frustrated as well.

Hi Jeff, Chris,
Have you tried the hleofxquote tool mentioned in my post # 7?

No I have not tried that. Was hoping to just have an application like the current updater that does not require a lot of manual work.

You mean something along the lines of "...and current prices can be downloaded automatically." as it states in their blurb about the program when encouraging you to buy?
Please can someone from IK comment on this and explain what is being done?
What I find is that the Alphavantage updater gives varying results, sometime bringing in prices in pounds, sometimes pence (but not for all stocks). There is a thought that this depends on whether the exchange is open or closed, but I am not convinced.
I have tried the hleofxquote tool but it is far more cumbersome, in part because whilst the Yahoo2 works for half of my stocks, it fails on the others, so I have to use the FT one which works for the other half plus the exchange rates. So that is a double update and between the two I have to change the stock codes in the first window. It is NOT a reasonable work around for non technical people.

EXACTLY…..We need the automated downloads to work without having to go thru so much manual work on hleofxquote…this is not a workable solution and alphavantage is spotty. This kind of stock syncing has been going on for 15+ yrs with software programs.

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with IK and am not a MD user. I maintain the hleofxquotes tool. As such, my main interest is mostly on user case that I could use to improve the tool functionality.
@JimRB: Your use case is an interesting one: fetching from multiple quote sources and merge result into a single price list. If you think this is something useful for your usage, do you mind posting more details (list of quotes that failed on Yahoo and OK on FT and vice versa) at http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/investments/3036-third-par...
Best,

I've posted this in the other thread as requested.
On playing around further with and without the ".L" suffix (Yahoo needs it for mutual funds, FT does not accept it), and changing the format of currencies from (for example) GBPJPY to JPYGBP=X, there is one that is not found in each, but Yahoo has an added oddity of nearly a month old prices for three funds.
