WealthSimple
Does anyone know how I can download/synchronize transaction with WealthSimple? They have native support for Mint integration, and I wonder if there's a way to leverage for Moneydance.
As it's a Robo Advisor investment account, there are always activities happening in there and it's too painful to replicate those transactions manually...
Thank you.
Chris

Hi Chris,
Moneydance supports automatic downloads via Direct Connect, and you can view a list of financial institutions that support this feature here.
Unfortunately WealthSimple do not support Direct Connect access. If they begin to support this connection method at any point, we'd be happy to establish a connection with them.
If you've previously connected within other personal finance software, your bank likely supports another connection method - Quicken Connect, Web Connect or Express Web Connect.
Moneydance only supports automatic downloads via Direct Connect - This is for your security, and you can read more about why we only support this connection type in our blog and also in this article.
By only using Direct Connect, we can guarantee that your username, password and financial data only ever exists with your bank or on your own personal computer, and at no point are your details stored on another server.
Without Direct Connect, you are still able to easily import your data into the program. The best way to get your files into Moneydance is to use a web browser to download them from your bank's web site.
You can download into QFX, OFX, OFC or QIF files (aka Quicken or MS Money files), any of which will import cleanly into Moneydance. You can find the steps for manually importing your data in this article.
You can also open your banks website directly from Moneydance by selecting Online --> Open Account Website, which makes the download process easier.

Hi Ian,
Thank you for the tips. It looks like the only way to export from Wealthsimple is via CSV, but it doesn't seem to work (i.e. nothing happens after the import).
The CSV entries look like the following:
Date Description Original Description Amount Transaction Type Category Account Name Labels Notes
4/06/2018 Vti - Vanguard Index Stk Mkt Etf: 23-mar-18 (record Date) 59.3304 Shares, Gross 36.64 Usd, Convert To Cad @ 1.2772 VTI - Vanguard Index STK MKT ETF: 23-MAR-18 (record date) 559.3304 shares, gross 36.64 USD, convert to CAD @ 1.2772 44.41 credit Dividend & Cap Gains RRSP
Thank you.
Chris

Hi Chris,
Would it be possible for you to send a copy or sample of the file in the CSV format?
With the a sample or copy of the file - I can provide the exact steps you'll need to get the data into Moneydance.
It seems some formatting has been missed with the copied information you've provided - it would be good to ensure these problems don't exist within the file itself.
If there are any manual changes you'll need to make, I can provide steps to do this easily. Do you have access to spreadsheet software like Excel or Numbers?

Hi Chris,
Did you previously download your WealthSimple data using automatic downloads?
Unfortunately there is no standard format for a CSV file, or the data contained within, which makes the import process trickier. Is CSV the only format your bank provide?
I have been able to import this transaction to Moneydance, but as it's an investment transaction - there will be further work to be done once the data is imported. For example, the number of shares etc will not automatically be applied. The transactions will be input to the register, and you can make further adjustments so your data is reflected accurately.
I understand this may not suit your needs - if you have been using automatic downloads successfully, this will be much more work.
Before beginning, you may want to remove the top line from the CSV file, so that the column titles are removed. These titles can cause problems during the import process.
I have provided the steps below I followed to get the transaction imported -
From Moneydance choose File --> Import, then select the CSV file.
Import to - the account you'd like to use.
Fields Delimiter is a comma [ , ]
Date format is MDY
Decimal point is a period [ . ]
In the next window, choose more/less fields so exactly 9 fields are displayed.
Set these fields as -
1 - Date
2 - Description
3 - Ignore
4 - Amount
5 - Ignore
6 - Category
7 - Ignore
8 - Ignore
9 - Ignore
Then click OK and your data should appear in the register.
Can you try following these steps and let me know how you get on?

Hi Jenny,
It looks like it's the header line that messed up the CSV import. Thank you for pointing that out.
As it turns out, the CSV import is not a viable method given how little information is provided by the data provider (Mint) and how it was formatted... :-( Considering the nature of the account (i.e. a Robo Advisor account where they constantly reinvest dividend, and rebalance), I think I'm better off monitoring it passively as an "asset" account and just adjust the account balance quarterly/monthly instead...
Thank you for your help.
Chris
