Hi Bonnie
Looks like you are doing all the right things, 2017.8(1691) and v1018 of the Q & ER and if it was working and you have made no changes to setting.
Perhaps time to try a new way of obtaining quotes and importing them into Moneydance.
I have given up on the Q & ER extension.
I am using a free stand-alone program that was originally developed to help out users of MS Money when Microsoft stopped supporting that product. The program is in java, like Moneydance and thus runs on Windows, Mac and Linux computers.
Take a look at his thread and download the PDF outlining how to use the program and link to download the program. Post 236 in this thread.

Let us know how this program performs for you and post if you have any problems setting it up and I will get you up and running.
It’s a good idea to click on the “SUBSCRIBE TO UPDATES” button to you are cheap up to date including when new builds are available.
Hope this helps

Thanks for your response. The strangest thing I discovered is the prices were updating for most of my holdings if I went to history but they were not posting with dates to the history. If I hit new that posted them. A lot of work. That worked for everything but one mutual fund. I had revised the mutual fund by removing either symbol and description and then hit the new button in history. It would show up correct in my networth statement until I started up the program again and it would revert back by removing the NEW price. Finally cleared all the old history and that has fixed the problem for today! This was a large holding and also a difference of over $200 in price so it was very noticeable.
When I have more time next weekend I will dig into you suggestion.
Thanks
Bonnie

After putzing around a bit, I think I found the root of (part of) the problem. If you request 5 or less quotes from Alphvantage, things seem to work reasonably well most of the time. Apparently this is a limit of the free API key.
By going into Extensions->Quotes and Exchange Rates and selecting only a few at a time, all the securities seem to download.
Crude but effective.
Maybe a 12 second delay between download requests when the total is over five? (As an option?)

I am having the same problem. I don't understand why this problem was sort-of fixed for a time, and now it's back, worse than ever. Can it be that difficult to nail this problem down and fix it? The data downloads from Yahoo were never a problem. I suspect that if there were a reliable data source, people would be willing to pay for it. I really don't want to have to manually enter stock quotes every day. If you are listening, Infinite Kind, please do something.

I would also pay. This problem is going to force me to look at other options.

Yep - other posts confirm that the free Alphavantage only allows 5 updates per minutes.
This why if you select 5 and update they work. Then if you wait and select another 5 they work.
I guess the update tool could be given some intelligence so that it doesn't always start with the same ones so it could work through a set over a period of a few minutes.
They DO allow more updates if you want to pay, but $19 a month seems steep to me unless you are a professional user.

Would love to hear from IK Support on what they're thinking.
8 Posted by davet65 on 09 Aug, 2018 01:38 PM
I, like others, have lived with this stock price update situation/mess ever since Yahoo apparently stopped serving the likes of Moneydance. It is really "getting old".
Two comments:
I have looked at several of the threads involving this, and may have missed it, but the lack of response from IK Support is disappointing at best. This is basic to a financial management program, and will drive me and others to look for an alternative. I have not yet attempted derekkent23's workaround because I keep hoping MD will step up and solve the problem.
Second, lacking a robust price update function, it would be VERY HELPFUL if MD had a price chart which listed name, symbol, current price, date for price and an input block for manually putting in a new price. Perhaps I am missing something here, too, but even if you want to manually update prices, the means to do so for 50 or 100 holdings is just an impossible burden now. You have to go to each account, then each holding, then History to see what the current price / price date is. Building that off of the Portfolio View by Account would be one way to make that reasonable. And would be a means to only see active holdings.
Last comment: The investment portion of Quicken from 20 years ago was better than MD today.

Hi davet65
As you are already aware the simplest alternative to the Q & ER is the free stand-alone program. It worth a try, nothing to loss.
You asked is there a simpler manual way to update security prices than the one you outlined.
Yes, there is!
Try the Security Price Entry extension, see screen shot.
Hope this helps

derekkent23,
Thanks for responding. I have concerns with both of your suggestions for my situation, and since you seem to be quite knowledgeable about this topic, I will respond later when I have more time.

I'm in the UK and download about a dozen UK stock prices.
Recently I've had problems with the prices being downloaded in Pounds Sterling instead of Pence Sterling. I've had to correct these manually.
Now it appears that none of them are updating. The information about the number of errors that flashes by at the bottom of the Q & ER screen keeps mentioning errors - if you can read that quickly.
This thread doesn't have any answers that I can see, and the alternatives are interesting technically, but you shouldn't have revert to these as a basic user who just wants to get on with managing finances.
There is a marked absence of Support Staff involvement on this issue, and on similar thraeds on the subject, which is unusual because they are usually excellent.
Something from Infinite Kind about what is happening, and even if we've got to pay for the full service, would help immensly.

I too am having problems with Alphavantage. I guess I will go look at Security Price Entry extension. Wish MD would find a permanent solution.

Hi Paul
I am a UK investor and have found that Alpha Vantage provide very poor support for UK/Irish/Luxenberg etc, domiciled funds. I have removed the Q & ER extension as I was also getting inaccurate data messing up the price history for some of the securities it could find data on.
A major problem being that on some funds the prices keep switching back and forward between Pence and Pounds
I am using a free stand-alone program that was originally developed to help out users of MS Money when Microsoft stopped supporting that product. The developer is actively supporting this software and has adapted it to work with Moneydance. This current build very stable and the quotes very consistent. No strange prices or for UK funds switching back and forward between Pence and Pounds. It has a lot of useful features. These include obtaining quote for stocks & funds, from many stock exchanges US, Canada, UK, Europe and Australia to name but a few. The ability to convert quotes from one currency to another. Convert prices in Pence to Pounds, if required, for UK stocks and funds. Provide a means for importing all this data into Moneydance. You can also import exchange rates along with your security prices.
The program is in java, like Moneydance and thus runs on Windows, Mac and Linux computers.
Take a look at his thread and download the PDF outlining how to use the program and link to download the program. Post 236 in this thread.

Thanks very much for this, Derek - I had no idea of the scale of interest in this issue and the efforts to resolve it.
I’ll be working through this and l’ll let you know how it goes.
I am still mystified by the total lack of involvement by Infinite Kind.

Derek, I appreciate your efforts to fill in the gaps that MD should be filling, but I have a couple of obstacles to do what you suggested.
I feel capable of using your stand-alone program, but as paul.r.smith said, why should I have to do that, and where is MD support on this issue??? I have >50 active securities and >200 securities which are no longer active, but appear in transactions in accounts. So I would have to sort through the securities to identify the active ones and then manually enter the info. I don’t see a way to lift a file of the active securities info out of MD to paste into the stand-alone program. Perhaps I’m missing that [but read below].
In order to use the Security Price stand-alone, the best place to view my active holdings is the QER Settings page in the extension, which shows Name and Symbol, allows me to select securities that I own, but no price and no price date. In addition, I see no way to copy the Name and Symbol so that I can input them into the stand-alone; as far as I can see, I have to do it manually.
And Security Price Entry extension has a similar problem. All holdings, active and not, are listed, and there is no price date to allow one to identify what needs to be updated.
This latest situation with Alphadvantage reopens a long-standing issue I have with MD’s investment portion.
MD NEEDS a screen which shows the following info and lets you edit it:
Security Name
Symbol
Current Price
Current Price Date
Active [currently in Account(s)] or Inactive [checkbox to make Hidden]
A Google search produced an exchange I had in 2012 with MD support which acknowledged that MD does not have an option to hide securities, and deleting the [inactive] security will delete all transactions involving that security — which will create a complete mess. MD needs a way to hide inactive securities in the dropdown menus and most other places except the “master listing” suggested above. My suggestion from 2012 was to be passed along to the developers — we’re still waiting.
One last editorial comment: I have used MD since 2006, after abandoning Quicken Mac. MD was far from perfect then, but I hated Q/Intuit’s treatment of Mac users. MD has improved a lot, but I do keep looking for a viable Mac alternative. So far, I haven’t found the perfect software, though one is getting closer.

davet65,
You say, "I do keep looking for a viable Mac alternative. So far, I haven’t found the perfect software, though one is getting closer."
Out of curiosity, which one is that?

Hi davet65
I can’t control what MD does or does not do, sorry.
The best I can do is try to help others user.
The PDF addresses the issue of how to extract active securities from Moneydance. It’s not a one button click operation, in fact I list 14 steps to get to the point where you have run the program and obtained quotes. The best I could come up with, but it’s pretty simple to enact and you only do it once. Take another look at the PDF.

Derek
The program works great. After I updated Java and enabled the download on my Mac the final problem was figuring out that on a Mac I had to use Control Click on the quotes to get to the import screen! Then it was like magic. Now my question is where does this program reside on my Mac besides just leaving it open?
Also should I uninstall the MD Quoptes extension?

Hi Bonnie
Really glad you are finding hleofxquotes stand-alone program and Mikes extension works for you.
I not sure I understand your comment “had to use Control Click on the quotes to get to the import screen!” if this is proving an issue elaborate perhaps with a screen shot.
The following is coloured by the fact I am a windows user. But if you hit problems both hleofxquotes and Mike use Mac computers.
The hleofxquotes stand-alone program you downloaded “hleOfxQuotes-gui-Build_20180723_209-exec.jar” is the program. If you left it in in your download folder that’s its location. When you double click on it, it starts the program it does not install at another location. I create a short cut of the program and placed it on my desktop so its easy to find and run.
I have uninstalled the Q &ER extension under EXTENSION – MANAGE EXTENSIONS to prevent me from inadvertently running it.
Make sure you click on "Subscribe to updates" button top right of the main thread to ensure you get important new of new releases of the program at http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/investments/3036-third-par...

Derek,
My apologies for missing the .pdf instructions, but what I did wrong might be useful to others.
I saw the link to
Hleofxquotes_Program_used_with_Moneydance_209
in the thread that you referred to.
I saw the warning to look for later versions, went to the next page of the thread and saw
Hleofxquotes_Beta_Program_used_with_Moneydance_V2.pdf
listed right at the top. I realize now that was the FIRST posting, not a newer version, and the V2 version is only 3 pages, not 5 pages like 209, and does not include the 14 steps.
I will now give your software a try.
And I do appreciate your efforts to help us when MD lets us down like this. My comment was directed at that, not you :-) .

Mike V,
There is a little-known program called "SEE Finance" by Scimonoce Software that I have trial used a couple of times. First time, it had limitations/omissions that were unacceptable. They recently had a major re-write to V2 that cleaned up many but not all, and hence it is still unacceptable FOR MY WANTS AND NEEDS.
The state of this program reminds me of 2006 when I bought into MD. I was reluctant then to commit to a "little known" program, but it has worked out for the most part. And I learned to work with - and around - MD just like I would expect to have to do with any new program.
I am reluctant to go further here, but if you would like more details about my recent experience with trial use of SEE Finance, reply here and I will give you an email address to reach me personally [if I'm allowed to do that here??].

davet65,
Thank you for the information. I may try the trial version; however, I have been reasonably satisfied with MD except: (1) importing cvs investment transactions, (2) security price updates, (3) difficulty seeing and editing payees, and (4) inflexible report formats preventing customer customization. Don't want you to post your email in the open. Shame we don't have private messaging.
Regards,
MikeV

Mike V,
Thanks for considering my privacy. I have an email address that I use for all kinds of sites and it's out there, so I was willing to post it. Nevertheless, thanks.
I will mention the big Plus and two big minuses for SEE Finance for me:
+ I believe the User Interface as a whole is more intuitive than MD and account/transaction choices better.
- SEE doesn't have a home page at all, let alone one that is as complete as MD. It's "coming".
- SEE's scheduled transaction and downloaded transaction handling are not as good as MD. MD's home page calendar and reminders are very good.
As I review this in my mind, it is clear to me why I have stayed with MD for so long. While not perfect, it is a powerful, worthwhile personal finance program [notwithstanding the fact that trying to create a Portfolio Report using Build 1691 so that I could try Derek's security price workaround caused MD on my Mac to freeze - support request posted in Problems].

Hi davet65
It never rains but it pours.
Just tested 2017.8(1691) on my windows PC.
Just to confirm I select Portfolio then click Edit, Reset, OK and then click on the Copy to Clipboard button in the top right of the dialog, without a freeze.
What version of Mac is your computer running?

Hi davet65
Instead of using copy to clipboard can you try SAVE with format set to comma delimited and import that into your equivalent to excel.
29 Posted by davet65 on 15 Aug, 2018 06:02 PM
Derek,
Here is what I sent to support. "Henry" has responded and I sent my err log.txt.
*************
I am running MD 2017.8 1691 on Mac 10.13.6. I can create any report I select EXCEPT the Portfolio Report. It freezes my Mac and I have to Force Quit MD. The CPU goes up to the 90% User range and stays there.
I tried MD 2017.8 1686 and that freezes, too.
If I go back to 2017.7 1670, it creates OK.
*************
I haven't had time to work through all 14 steps using the report I was able to produce. I do have the info transferred to a LibreOffice SS.
I am suspicious that my MD file is corrupted somehow, as it dates back to 2006 and is approaching 300 MB in size. Unless MD did a rebuild as part of a version update, it has never been cleaned up. I normally would have archived and deleted prior years, but posts here have said not to do that?! And I'm not sure MD keeps the "new" starting balances correct if you do that, particularly investment holdings. Quicken did that very well, and actually had an Archive command as I recall.
Thanks for your interest.
30 Posted by Mike V. on 15 Aug, 2018 07:22 PM
I select Portfolio then click Edit, Reset, OK and then click on the Copy to Clipboard button in the top right of the dialog, without a freeze as well.
I have archived, but did it manually by making a list of the starting values in my accounts and then manually updating after deleting transactions. A real pain.
