Why wont IK implement a stock quote system
I don't understand why IK won't implement a native quotes and exchange rate system. IK's been relying on 3rd parties to implement this functionality for years, and it gets more and more complicated. The most recent offering using Hleofx is not endorsed by IK and is a 'use at your own risk - not guaranteed to be supported in the future' offering.
Tracking quotes is one of those rather basic functionalities I expect from my money management program and I think it is shameful that IK has avoided this issue for so long. I muddled my way through with the Quotes and Exchange Rates extension for years, but now that this extension doesn't work anymore, I'm thinking its time to move onto another program like Quicken.
IK: are you planning on doing anything about this or are we on our own, taking our chances with 3rd parties?

I'm a fellow user.
The Quotes and Exchange rate extension is maintained by the Moneydance developers, it has just been implemented as an extension. This does allow for users who do not need quotes to not have it installed it also allows for it to be changed outside of the Moneydance program itself
The developers have recently added another source for Quotes - IEX - This seems to be good for US stocks and ECB for Exchange rates.
Quicken has traditionally taken the path of maintaining its own server with stock prices - and you pay for this in the software, but also it does not maintain prices for stock around the world, Quicken of course is software for the North American market whereas Moneydance has a world wide user base. Reuters can provide world wide prices, however such a service is extremely pricey, well beyond an organisation like Infinite Kind who would have to implement a subscription type model to pay for it - whether a user wants the service or not.
Solutions like the third party one that Mike and hlequotes have provided can use sources that moneydance cannot by the virtue of them being individual providers not gaining any commercial consideration through the solution.

The issue of stock quotes has been a problematical one for MD. We rely on free quotes from 3rd party suppliers because it allows us to keep our app subscription free. It ensures that you can continue to use the version of MD you first purchased without ever being forced to upgrade.
I understand this is a frustration and inconvenience, we attempt to make our extensions productive add-ons to the main app. And we endeavor to be as user friendly as possible.

Well this is kind of a straw that broke the camel's back thing.
I switched to MD years ago because for what it does, it works and is stable. I rarely have issues with MD crashing or glitching and it's never corrupted my data file. That means a lot to me.
On the other hand, there are many frustrations with MD; from no memorized transactions, I find the budget module awkward and is not practical for my purposes, matching downloaded transactions is more labor intensive than it needs to be, reports are limited, data export is limited, support for financial transactions needs improvement, mobile device support is buggy. Like other users, I've got multiple Excel files that I use in parallel with MD to track my family budget and investments. I've got about 10,000 lines of VBA code that process MD data into another form that I can manipulate and view in Excel.
I've been willing to put up with this level of hassle because I appreciate MD's rock-solid performance and it otherwise fits my needs well.
However, I won't use Hleofx until IK officially endorses it, and the QER extension doesn't work for me anymore. This means, as far as I'm concerned, that MD no longer has the ability to download quotes.
This is enough that I purchased Quicken today and have started to move my data over. We'll see how it goes. I've already seen some indicators that it still has stability issues, so maybe I'll wind up staying with MD after all. But at this point I'm willing to give up a few days of my life getting Quicken all setup and such to see if it will work for me. And I don't have a lot of time on my hands.
We'll see how this goes.

Retail, How's it going with Quicken? I agree 1,000% with your position/complaints. I am in the same boat where I now view IK as not having quote download capability. That IK does not download quotes is an absolute joke. I am not "tech savy" at all, and the idea of being expected to navigate my way through something like Hleofx, even if it were supported (which it isnt) is ridiculous, especially for a pay service.

I'm a fellow user.
If you are in the US and only have US stocks then I would suggest you try the Moneydance provided and supported Quotes and Exchange Rates Extension, with IEX being used as the source of prices.
For exchange rates ECB (European Central Bank) should be used. as the source.
Moneydance, like any commercial tool that provides stock prices and exchanges rates for free is limited to the sources it can use.
The problems seen with Alpha Vantage are created by Alpha Vantage - limited download rates, manipulation of some prices from the UK market, coverage problems. Blaming Moneydance for problems with Alpha Vantage is absurd as is blaming them for Yahoo's now owners withdrawing their use of the previous provided service that many people used.
The third party Quote Loader System uses sources that the company behind Moneydance cannot use as that would require expensive commercial agreements if it was at all possible. However it is a solid system that receives excellent support from the developers behind it as do many of the extensions provided by moneydance users.
I'm sure Moneydance (TIK) will continue to add sources to the official extension if suitable ones are identified. The two recent additions should help those that need exchange rates and/or have US stocks. Sources of stock quotes for the rest of the world are not that easy to identify and mutual fund prices have always been problematic as these are not traded securities hence there is no "market" that can be looked at.

DWG, Appreciate the comments, but I think you missed what Retail stated, and what I implied but will more explicitly state now: the Quotes and Exchange Rates Extension is no longer working. At least it isn't for me. If there is some fix or patch that's needed, I am not a techie, or a tinkerer and I just want the software that I paid for to work when I use it.

I have seen no other reports of it not working at all. What version & build of Moneydance are you using and what version of the Q & ER extension? Are there any errors in you error log when you try to use it?

Yes, all my mutual funds show a big red X and "No History records returned for" Any stocks/ETFs are fine.
I am using the latest version 2017.10 (1706) or so my update extension tells me.

No history returned means that either the symbol is wrong or the source being used does not source those quotes.
Alpha Vantage tends to not hold fund prices, their decision, nothing that Moneydance can do about that.
The user created Quote Loader system uses sources not available for the company behind Moneydance to use and those sources appear to be better at maintaining fund prices.
You can find out about that system at:
