Loading several years of QIF investment data - should I set up securities before loading the transaction data

I am in the process of taking several years of investment history and adding it to my existing MD instance which has been used to track banking transactions for a few years. .
This will allow me to discontinue loading transactions into a series of spreadsheets.
The investment transaction file started as csv and is loaded into Excel to manipulate because the broker has changed the way transactions were recorded several times over the years.
I then use a plugin to create a QIF format file.
I have been loading this into a test MD file and allowing MD to create securities on "Buy" transactions.
Is/are there any problems with using this approach or should I create the securities prior to loading the QIF file?

Thanks for any feedback on this topic.
