These are accounts in which managers buy or sell securities on my behalf, and may contain many securities. They differ from mutual funds in that I actually own the securities in the managed accounts. I am not interested in showing the value for each security in these accounts, only the total value of each account. How can I go about entering these in Moneydance? If, for example, I entered the brokerage name as a new investment, would the various account values be entered, or do I have to specify the name of each managed account? Please let me know if this isn't clear.

Alan Sterntag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/471869992019-06-03T18:08:25Z2019-06-03T18:08:25ZManaged accounts

I have the same situation (Managed Accounts). I want to enter the front page summary of each account each month and have MD provide stats about the Managed Accounts. My transactions include: Beginning Value, Dividends/Interest, Appreciation/Depreciation, Withdrawals/Deposits, Other Income/Expense, and Ending Value. Any help would be appreciated.

dalechamtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/471869992019-06-03T22:46:27Z2019-06-03T22:46:27ZManaged accounts

I'm a fellow user.

The investment design in Moneydance is a fairly typical one. You have an Investment account that has one or more securities in it and you trade in these securities.

It works as expected for shares and also for mutual funds, to be fair it works for anything that is based on dealing in units and a per unit price which most investments are. It has problems when the data you have is not in a suitable format for automation of its entry and the volume is such that manual entry is not feasible. It also does not have the capability to just maintain summary level information i.e data at a level higher than the individual security/fund.

There are a number of approaches you can take.

The simplest to take is to set it up as an Asset account. Transactions are just entered as amounts and are suitably categorized. This will feed into Net Worth correctly, performance information is a somewhat harder to get out.

The other approach is to fit the account into the model Moneydance is using. This is the approach I took. At any one time I have investments in 20-24 funds underneath a master account. I decided I want to keep records at this master account level - the data I can get for each individual fund is unusable for loading into Moneydance it is statement level info. So at the master level I need quantity and price information, but the master level is not a fund or an investment in its own right.

My solution was to build a fairly simple spreadsheet that would calculate the data for me so I could mimic the master account acting like a fund or stock would. My initial buy was at a price of 1.00 so the quantity (units) and value were the same.

At the end of each month I go in a find out the value of the investment, enter it into the Spreadsheet in a specific column and it would calculate a new unit price, this I enter into the price history in Moneydance thus accounting for change in market value.

Buys and sells I enter into the spreadsheet and allow it to calculate the quantity/unit price based on the value and the current unit price I am using, whether it be the price at the start of the month or a new price based in the values just before the transaction, which again I can enter into the spreadsheet. Dividends I just enter as I would for any investment but if I reinvest I have to get the price and number of units from the spreadsheet.

What way to go depends on what you want out of it and what you are willing to do. The way I do it I do not find onerous, but also none of the investment data here is really downloadable in a useful way so I am used to a level of manual entry.

I have put forward a suggestion to the developers on how such situations could be handled in Moneydance, which is similar to the way another product does it. Whether this can/would be adopted at some point in the future I cannot say.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/471869992019-06-04T19:55:30Z2019-06-04T19:55:30ZManaged accounts

dwg,
Thank you for your email detailing a way to handle Managed Accounts in
MoneyDance.

I am a new MoneyDance user using the 2019 version. I plan to use the
technique you described. It was exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks again,
