can't enter security transactions
I can't select anything except "xfr" from the action dropdown in the register view

I'm a fellow user.
Have you created the Security (which is a separate process) and also associated it with the Investment account?
Setting up Investment accounts and the securities you have is a multi step process. It is designed this way, so that each security is only setup once and specific data for it maintained for it in one place (like price info) but you can use it in one or more investment accounts. This is in contrast to a well known program that maintains securities separately in each account they are used in.
