How do I add history for investments

If I add the details of previous share purchases in the history they do not show up in the balance. Same thing if I add them as transactions. The only way I can get the balance on the investment to show is if I put in a monetary opening balance, but it would be nice to show how the position had accumulated with number of shares purchased and price per share.

    I'm a fellow user.

You have to enter each as a buy transaction which means there needs to be funds in the account to cover the purchases recorded. The easiest way to allow for the cash to do this is to adjust the Opening balance on the Account Info screen.

In most instances the final cash balance in the account will be 0. it is not the goal of the transaction register to show total share numbers or anything like that, it just shows all transactions. The display of security information is done in places like the securities screen, the summary screen and through various reports like the cost basis report.

If you use the BuyXfr and Sellfr action code, you dont need to keep track of the cash balance register. it only records the share transactions changes.

Thanks – in the end I added the securities using the Buy Xfr category instead and it did the trick.
