The MD investment feature is not a complete investment tracker but does allow you to keep track of the most common activities. So don't expect too much. I added the Security price extension and every month when I get a statement, I update the price of the securities because some are part of my 401K and are not listed on any exchange. I then use the Portfolio View to check the Shares count for each security to make sure it matches my statement. I use Fidelity and some of the transactions download as a transaction type that does not reflect correctly in MD. I then use SellXfr Action and a dummy Category I created show the correct security and cash balances as needed. For instance, any Fees will show up as a Sell Action against a security which also cause my register cash value to go negative. I just change that to a SellXfr Action and use a dummy Category I created for that category so the cash value on the investment register is not affected. It becomes a little tricky on the quarterly Dividend payment, but using Div action and Buy Actions, I'm able to get the MD register to reflect the correct balances on the Portfolio. That may not be the smoothest way to keep everything straight, but it works for me and MD.

mhoggietag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483247862020-05-14T21:16:07Z2020-05-14T21:16:07ZWithin Portfolio view, how do i clear the 'cash balance' figure to show actual portfolio value.

I'm a fellow user.

In net worth reporting you can either include or exclude an account - you cannot selectively include/exckude parts of an account.

So it sounds like you have set up the investments and purchase transactions for them, which results in the negative balance. As a new user of finance software I would not expect the bank transactions to go back far enough to have the necessary transactions to fund the share purchases.

It is expected when you start using software that you will not go back to when everything started and enter all data so Moneydance has provision for a Initial Balance in order to provide the starting cash balance.

Select the account in question then choose the menu item Account --> Edit Account and you should see an Initial Balance field, unless you carry some cash in the Investment account the amount you enter here will probably be the amount of you negative balance in the account entered as a positive amount. This will zero out the investment accounts cash balance at this point in time.

Some more information about the initial balance is in the Knowledge Base article:

Thank you for your kind response and solutions to my situation.

I looked at both of your solutions but the quickest and easiest one was from dwg.

I just changed the value of my cash balance of my 'Stocks and Shares' account from zero to my negative cash balance value and hey presto....my cash balance is now zero, reflecting the actual value of the shares in my portfolio.

Thank you both of you for your time and effort in helping me tailor Moneydance to work the way I want it to.
