<p>I suspect you may have entered a positive (+) amount in the Investment account. That is a transfer in. But it does seem more complicated than necessary.</p>
<p>I don't have to enter a negative number when I transfer money from a bank account to another account (Bank or Investment, etc..) I would think that if I enter a transfer and I use the transfer category that I configured as an expense then it should automatically transfer the amount out just like any other account.</p>

<p>In account other than investment accounts you have separate payment and deposit fields, so the choice of field used determines if it is a transfer in or a transfer out. Investment accounts just have the one field for a transaction amount.</p>
<p>Categories are really types of accounts, the class of category type determines how the overall category is viewed but you can still have both deposit and payment transactions in a category. Consider a situation where you buy something record the transaction and then later take the item back for a refund. You record the refund as a negative expense to net the item to a zero value. Hence posting to an expense category does not determine that it really should be seen as an expense.</p></div>dwg
