My version of Moneydance is 2017.10(1706) running on a iMac with OSX 10.14.6

I stopped updating quotes automatically a while back when the switch was made to AlphaVantage because it was way too slow and didn't recognize all of my ticker symbols. At the time I tried Mike Brays Quote Loader but it had an issue where it would only load the quotes into one of my investment accounts.

I noticed that Quote Loader has been updated since my last visit to this forum. After looking at past posts I have been unable to determine the answer to two questions.

1 - Will Quote Loader now update the quotes across different investment accounts?
2 - Is the new version of Quote Loader compatible with my version of MD?

Thanks,
Jack

    I'm a fellow user.

Moneydance is designed so that the Investment accounts and the definition of securities are separated. Hence it is intended that securities and their prices only be held once, and that the security definition be associated with each account that the security is held in.

It is not intended that you defined a separate security for each account it is held in, the security definition and the prices are not stored as part of the Investment Account.

Given the design of Moneydance and the intent, Quote Loader will only update one instances of a security. I do not believe there is an intention to change this. I believe it is an aberration that the Quotes and Exchange Rate extension updates the same security when they are defined multiple times.

As far as I am aware none of the testers looks at QL against MD2017 any more. MD2017 uses a much older version of Java and all development is with newer versions so there should be no expectation of it working or be supported with MD2017, there were discussion about using features in latter versions of Java, but I do not recall the outcome.

    Hi jcf_m_lists

I would recommend upgrading Moneydance to 2020.2(1929) if you want to use Quite Loader with Moneydance. The current version of Quote Loader only works with 2019/2020.

If your original purchase of Moneydance was for 2017 then the upgrade is free.
If your original purchase of Moneydance was for an earlier version you can get a 50% discount by entering your key at https://infinitekind.com/purchase
Always do a EXPORT BACKUP before you upgrade.

Quote Loader has moved on a long way since you last looked at it, for instance it can now obtain historical data and its now an approved extension to be found under EXTENSIONS – MANAGE EXTENSIONS . For more information download the PDF in post 63 at https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/investments/4914-the...

If you do upgrade, I can post the one-time process that you will need to perform to ensure the same security gets updated in all investment accounts.

    Hope this helps.

    derekkent23 thanks for the info.
I am eligible for a free upgrade so I need to decide if I want to upgrade or not.
I guess I can try it on my Linux lap top to try it out first before upgrading on my Mac.
Could you send me the one-time process you mentioned?

Maybe this newer version of MD will also fix an issue with the calendar/reminders I found years ago.

    Thanks,
    Jack

    Hi jcf_m_lists

I think upgrading to 2020 is worth the move but no bad idea to try things out on your Linux first.

In situations where you have a security in two investment accounts, but only one updates when you run Quote Loader, you have set things up incorrectly.

Under TOOLS – SECURITIES you have set up two instances of the same security, using the same ticker symbol, this is the reason for the problem.

You should only ever set up one instance of a security with a given ticker symbol under TOOLS – SECURITIES. You can then add this security to more than one investment account.

If you have more than two investment accounts and have thus set up more than two versions of the same security the process principle is the same you are working towards having only one version of the subject security in all your accounts resulting in the subject security being listed only once under TOOLS – SECURITIES.

To correct this situation, proceed as follows:

First do a FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – EXPORT BACKUP in case you make a mistake.

You will need to perform this process for each duplicated Security.

Determine which of the investment accounts has the least transactions related to the subject security

    1. In the investment account SECURITY DETAIL tab use the drop down to select the subject security. Click HISTORY then EDIT and change the name of the Security to CHANGE ME.

    2. Then in the same investment account SECURITY DETAIL tab, click ADD SECURITY and add the subject security to the account.

    3. Now click on the REGISTER tab and select the transactions that contain CHANGE ME in the SECURITY field using the dropdown to select the subject security. You need to do this everywhere a transaction contains CHANGE ME.

    4. Back in the SECURITY DETAIL tab click on REMOVE SECURITY and select CHANGE ME in the dropdown. Then click OK.

Done, now when you check under TOOLS – SECURITIES there is only one subject security and when you use Quote Loader both investment accounts are updated.

Another user had the same issue. In his case he had the security “Vanguard Short-Term Bond Index Fund ETF Shares” duplicated under TOOLS – SECURITIES.
I put together a YouTube video that showed the corrective action I had laid out for him. Take a look it will help you to understand the corrective process. Use this link to go to a YouTube video. https://youtu.be/Mulo9XkklAY

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information. It's very helpful and I now see what I did
wrong in setting my stuff up but correcting what I have is going to be a
    lot of work.
I have 21 shared investments between two different investments accounts
one IRA and a regular account. So I will have to change 21 individual
investments and every monthly transaction for years. I'm not sure it's
    worth the time or not.

I'm going to have to mull this over for a while.

I will at least add new investments the proper way so I won't have the
    duplication going forward.

    I do have a question.
Will this work regardless of the transaction type such as buying/selling shares, int/div reinvested etc.?

    Hi jcf_m_lists

I guess you have to way up the one-time effort with having to manually update prices for 21 securities each time you want to load latest price.
Perhaps try one of the easier securities to see how much effort is involved.
If you do go ahead, I suggest an EXPORT BACKUP after each security.

    Have fun, Stay Safe.

    Hi jcf_m_lists

You may have thought of this but in case after you change the security name to CHANGE ME and you are in the investment account register typing CHANGE ME in the search box filter can help you see the wood from the trees.

    Hope this helps

Yes, I did think of that. I'm going to go through the register searching
for each security to see how many thing I actually have to change.
This look like a way of changing the name of a security and it should
work with any transaction type buy, sell div/inst reinvest. Correct?

    Hi jcf_m_lists

I have not tested all the investment transaction types but cant think why it should not work.
If you go ahead let us know how you get on.

You can also sort the register by security.

Well I bit the bullet and did the correction to so I now have only one security that is now shared between my two accounts. It took about 5 4.5 hours including finding and correcting some errors I made along the way.
What the latest version of the Quote Updater that's available for my current version of MD. I haven't updated to 2020 yet.

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.

There is a forum thread but I currently do not have a pointer for it. However going back to the source this is the last version I know of that supported Moneydance 2017:

    https://bitbucket.org/mikerb/moneydance-2015/downloads/

You are looking at the file QL-2017-release-20190131.zip

and the Quote Loader PDF file that is in that directory.

The components that are required for the older version are quite different to the current release, as is the installation method.

    Hi jcf_m_lists

I don't think you will regret the effort you have put in.

I really urge you to upgrade to Moneydance 2020 even if as you suggested you try it on your Linux computer first. Quote loader has evolved since the 2017 version, it is signed by infinite kind as being safe, it can now be found under EXTENSIONS – MANAGE EXTENSIONS and thus easy to install and now can retrieved historical data as well as current data with many other enhancements.

However, if you want to continue with Moneydance 2017 Quote Loader for Moneydance 2017 instructions can be found at

    https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/investments/3771-thi...

Note: this is no longer actively supported and I haven’t tried to install it in years, but as far as I know it should still work.

    Hope this helps.

I loaded Quote Loader for MD 2017 and it works. It's a big improvement over the last version I saw. I do have one question on it's operation.
What settings do I choose if I don't want it to run on startup?
If have "Manual Only" selected for (Securities). Does that override the "Time of Run" setting.
    See attached screen shot.
