Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

Selecting Lot matching should fix the problem for you, namely the increase in value doesn't affect the cost.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you have further questions or need any assistance.

tried as you suggest and eventually got it to show a Cost Basis of $0, but not without a confusing Match Lots pop-up window: nothing to match, and the error message when I try to close that Match Lots pop-up, see attached.
Not sure if $0 is the correct basis, would have thought $1, since nobody gives to me anything for free. ;-)

Subsidiary question: why isn't there a simple and straightforward way to enter/correct a Cost Basis. Many users report problems with erroneous cost basis, which also results in totally erroneous Security Performance data...?

Fredtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489130822020-12-22T01:31:49Z2020-12-22T01:31:49ZCost Basis per Share shows $10,000 instead of $1

I'm a fellow user.

Cost basis is determined by transactions, unfortunately Moneydance and pretty much every other program does not have all of the transaction types that can impact cost basis, for example there is no Return of capital in Moneydance nor its inverse a capital call in the software. Some transactions can be posted that mimic what the missing transactions do - to a point - but it is not complete.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489130822020-12-22T03:58:13Z2020-12-22T04:08:23ZCost Basis per Share shows $10,000 instead of $1

Hi Fred,

Looking at your screenshot of the Securities Detail view, I see some issues.

First, the 'Price' column should reflect a price of 1 for those transactions, not 100.

Further, a Dividend paid out by the Fidelity Cash Reserves Fund would normally be reinvested back into the Fund.
Take for example the transaction dated 10/30/2017 in your screenshot:
The 'Action' should be changed to DivReinvest
The 'Shares' should be 0.27
The 'Price' should be 1 (again, not 100)
The 'Amount' is correct at 0.27 (if that is indeed the amount of the dividend)

I've included a screenshot of my Securities Detail for Fidelity Cash Reserves.
I've also included a screenshot of the Register for a typical DivReinvest transaction of the Fidelity Cash Reserves Fund.
My 'Cash Balance' column in the register of an investment account is almost always 0.
This is due to the fact that any dividend paid out by another investment is used to buy shares in the Fidelity Cash Reserves Fund and any dividend paid out by the Fidelity Cash Reserves Fund is reinvested into the Fund.

Could you expound a little on what the MiscExp transactions reflect?

many thanks for your insightful input.

I typically don’t change anything in the Register for these kind of transaction downloads, except for xfr, where the receiving account is almost always wrong, since MD picks the first entry in the alphabetical list of accounts and is not learning … .

The Price of 100 is what MD assigns to all such downloaded transactions and I don’t know why they would choose the value of 100 for this, in particular for US $ accounts; not sure how consequential that Price value is for the account, and often I am not even allowed to make a change to a value of what I deem appropriate.

The Action is again as assigned by MD, so sometimes it is Div and sometimes it is MiscExp - not sure what triggers what.

So, I guess I’ll have to adjust the Action and the Price to what they should be. Unfortunately, MD does not seem to learn so that when I make such correction to a transaction today, it will not learn to do the same automatically next time I have a similar downloaded transaction.

I was able to correct the totally erroneous Cost Basis in this holding. I have recently transferred my investment accounts from Fidelity to Schwab and wanted this cleaned up - done now..

I will be posting 2 new threads, one regarding the “Action” and one regarding Cash Balances in accounts.

My biggest pending and detailed posting is the totally wrong Cost Basis for my two holding of AAPL shares https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/investments/5573-cos... https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/investments/5573-cost-basis-incorrect and IK as well as the community has yet to offer a solution.

Merry Christmas
Fred

Fredtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/489130822020-12-23T02:28:54Z2020-12-23T02:28:54ZCost Basis per Share shows $10,000 instead of $1

Hi Fred,

You are correct with regards to Xfr transactions. They need to be manually tended to in order to make sure that funds are taken from (or given to) the proper account.

Fidelity tends to treat the Fidelity Cash Reserves fund like a red-headed stepchild.

They'll provide the Dividend transactions as part of their downloaded data but they don't provide the accompanying Buy transaction that completes the reinvestment of the dividend back into the fund.

There are 2 options. Either leave the Dividend transaction as is and manually enter it's corresponding Buy transaction to complete the reinvestment
Or...
Change the Div transaction to DivReinvest then enter the required Share value and edit the Price to 1.

I choose to do the latter.

I have to confess that I've never had a transaction related to the Fidelity Cash Reserves fund come in as a MiscExp.

I'm glad to hear that you were able get things sorted at least for this holding.
Good luck at Schwab.
