Investment realised gains in Moneydance do not use a transfer
from an income account in order to create value instead they use
the change in the securities price to create the value. As such an
income account is not used.
In order to see a report of investment gains, I would suggest
running the "Capital Gains" or "Cost Basis" report. Or have you
already tried these report, but they do not suit your needs?

I can’t see that ‘value’ is relevant here.
That relates purely to capital value, not income.

I don’t see what you are saying about income accounts as
an income account is an integral part of a MD investment account.
Dividends are entered in the register and appear as
‘income’ in the report. They also appear in the details
pane for that fund. So MD certainly ties income from a fund to that
fund.

The ‘income’ column in the built-in report
[Investment Performance] seems to give the total income from a
fund.

Many of us look at investments from two different perspectives.
Total ROI is more applicable after you sell out of an investment
when you can look at total income received (Dividends) plus total
capital gains.

On an ongoing basis it is very common to look at the two areas
independently.

Firstly you can look at potential capital gains from selling,
this may be something you look at to help determine if you should
sell at the time.

The other is income received i.e. the Dividends, and is often
referred to as Dividend Yield and expressed as a percentage. For
people that are retired and living of investment income like
Dividends then this can be important information. The total ROI you
can only achieve once, Dividend yield can change over time and is
an ongoing measure.

Apologies, I have misunderstood your initial question.

Please leave this with me, and I will investigate further if
this is something you are able to do within Moneydance, or if we
have a suitable work around.

If not, I will certainly include this in the list of
improvements.

Sorry the delay getting back to you. I have been investigating
with other members of our team, but we are unable to think of a
suitable solution for you.

I have been advised that you can play around with the investment
transaction report to get a list of the income distribution but you
have to ensure either the description or memo field is set up for
this to work.
There is an active ticket in our system to 'sort by action' option,
however this won't give any kind of metric against the share
value.

We believe the feature you require is an 'income by security'
report. I will create a ticket for this report, forward your
feedback onto the developers, and will attach the relevant ticket
to this discussion.

Apologies for any inconvenience this causes, and thank you for
your suggestion for improvement.

Thanks for your reply.

I can’t see that a list of income distribution would help
with this (anyway, the securities detail pane already gives you
this). You are still left with trying to work out a return % by
adding up income, and then you run headlong into the complication
where shares have been bought/sold during the period. The ROI
report takes care of this for total return. There is no practicable
way that users can do the same with income %.

Yes, a report [Investment Report – Income] is badly
needed. Can I suggest that you have something like the existing
report but with columns analogous to the ‘total return’
columns as follows :-

[Income Amount] [Income %] [Annual % Income]

£381 12% 3.2%

It is a mystery to me why other retired people are not
clamouring for this!
