Some imports from QIF. No downloads. Not exactly sure when these appeared, have only been using MD for about a week!

The Moranstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/490592542021-02-26T22:20:53Z2021-02-26T22:20:53ZSecurities duplicates

Ah. A week. Ok, so is it possible that your initial import created these duplicates? I see no other choice but to pick one of each security to be the master (rename to something like xxxx - master) and then txn by txn change the security in each account used (ie the buys/sells etc) to use the master security in each account. Once you’ve done this you can delete the non master securities.

FYI - my toolbox extension can tell you which security is being used where before you delete. (Currency and security menu).

I can think of a way this could happen.

If you were to import data from another program you have the same security in multiple investment accounts, but each security is stored not only independently but there is some differentiation between them.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/490592542021-02-27T08:38:26Z2021-02-27T08:38:26ZSecurities duplicates

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi

Another user ended up with duplicate Securities and these are the note I provided to correct this situation. I also provided a link to a YouTube video that may also help.

Proceed as follows:

First do a FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – EXPORT BACKUP in case you make a mistake.

You will need to perform this process for each duplicated Security.

Determine which of the investment accounts has the least transactions related to the subject security. Stuarts Toolbox may help in this.

In the investment account SECURITY DETAIL tab use the drop down to select the subject security. Click HISTORY then EDIT and change the name of the Security to CHANGE ME.

Then in the same investment account SECURITY DETAIL tab, click ADD SECURITY and add the subject security to the account.

Now click on the REGISTER tab and select the transactions that contain CHANGE ME in the SECURITY field using the dropdown to select the subject security. You need to do this everywhere a transaction contains CHANGE ME.

Back in the SECURITY DETAIL tab click on REMOVE SECURITY and select CHANGE ME in the dropdown. Then click OK.

Done, now when you check under TOOLS – SECURITIES there is only one subject security and when you use Quote Loader both investment accounts are updated.

Another user had the same issue. In his case he had the security “Vanguard Short-Term Bond Index Fund ETF Shares” duplicated under TOOLS – SECURITIES.
I put together a YouTube video that showed the corrective action I had laid out for him. Take a look it will help you to understand the corrective process. Use this link to go to a YouTube video.
https://youtu.be/Mulo9XkklAY

In this case the duplicate securities was affecting the ability of the Extension Quote Loader to obtain prices and update that price for a security in each investment account, hence why the end of the video shows Quote Loader being used.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/490592542021-02-27T13:39:16Z2021-02-27T13:39:16ZSecurities duplicates

Thanks for the input Stuart. I’ve suspected that importing multiple .QIF files was responsible. I’m working on consolidating and deleting!

The Moranstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/490592542021-02-27T13:55:34Z2021-02-27T13:55:35ZSecurities duplicates

After importing .QIF files I found securities in MD investment accounts that did not belong there. After deleting these the duplicate securities disappeared. In other cases I do not own the securities and they are not in any of my accounts. I was able to delete those. After getting everything cleaned up I proceeded to import more .QIFs and the duplicates reappeared! 

The Moranstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/490592542021-02-27T14:12:52Z2021-02-27T14:12:52ZSecurities duplicates

They must be referenced in the QIF... Try searching the QIF for the security name and report back what you find?

So I opened two of the .QIFs using BBEdit, a checking account and an investment account with only two securities and only two buy transactions. In addition to the transactions both files contain all my securities! So I guess every time I import an account, even if it’s not an investment account, I’m reimporting a list of securities and that this accounts for all the duplicates!

Also, on my M1 MacBook Pro I cannot install toolbox.

The Moranstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/490592542021-02-27T20:00:51Z2021-02-27T20:00:51ZSecurities duplicates

What is in a QIF file is dependent completely on the software it was exported from, some software will include various lists which could include securities, categories etc.

If the software has an option to export transactions only I would do that.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/490592542021-02-27T22:02:08Z2021-02-27T22:02:08ZSecurities duplicates

There is no option to limit what is exported to .QIF other than account and date range. But, I’m going to look at the .QIFs and delete the securities and see how that works.

The Morans
