Issues with 'Portfolio View' - refreshes on its own to inaccurate figures
I am running 2022.5 (4091). Data files size is 193,552,000 as I have 17 years of data on here. I can get fairly accurate portfolio reports using 'Reports and Graphs', but the default 'Portfolio View' keeps changing 'like a screen saver' to goofy figures as if it has a mind of its own'. Is my file size causing an issue, should I wipe down to maybe 1 year of information and manually reload my investment balances?. NOTE: I am primarily using MD for cashflow and tracking future expenditures, the art of trying to keep it in balance with my broker is very difficult, plus when I sell a bond, I just have to manually go in and wipe the purchase and sale, MD just cannot handle the bookkeeping or the reporting of the portfolio part of it. At any rate, I wondered if a fresh restart might help. your advice appreciated.
Thanks

just a user - you don't really need a fresh restart, as the file size won't be causing any of these issues.
Can't help you on the issues specifically, but I can discuss your file size. Do you have lots of attachments? Those eat up space faster than data entries.
You can use the Toolbox extension to both examine where your file "sizage" is, as well as shrink your data set - without expunging data (I'd hate to lose any of my 35 years of data - as the older data is like a diary for us). BTW - after doing what I mention below (shrink and remove most attachments) 35 years of data for me is about 95 mb...
Install Toolbox, Go to Toolbox Options (Upper left), click Advanced Mode. Then click Advanced Mode, which should have turned Red, Find "Shrink Dataset Size" under Update Functions.
You will see many "BACKUP YOUR DATASET" - Heed at least one of these, or make an Export Backup manually. This is a precaution if something goes wrong, but it shouldn't go wrong, but you never know.
Once you shrink your dataset (it might be quite a bit), we can also discuss removing some attachments. Throwing away your actual transactions is a lot of work, and a lot of fixup work.
1) Your file size should not be causing the issues you describe.
2) Shrink your dataset in this order:
a) Toolbox Shrink
b) Attachment removal
c) Transaction removal - really the worst thing to do.
3) I don't know why your portfolio view changes, but some here can probably give some thoughts, as they've found weird bugs before.
4) Your other issues can be dealt with once you remove your concern about file size.
Hope that helps.

Exactly as dtd says. In addition,

I updated tool box but it doesnt recognize my mouse. Cannot select
'Shrink Dataset size'. I tried exit then back to advanced and I tried
to proceed, no luck either way.

I’m guessing you haven’t clicked top left, toolbox options, enable advanced mode first?

From 193,978 to 72,011, that's quite an improvement, thank you. Left
setting on there for 30 days.
David
NOTE: The Reports and Graphs will generate portfolio that agrees to
sidebar totals. But the default 'Portfolio View' display something
reasonable when one first pulls it up, then changes to ludicrous numbers
that don't agree to sidebar. this shrink did not fix that. But again,
I am mainly using the system to track future transactions and cashflow,
but still wondering why it has 'lost its mind'. lol I just try to get
close on balancing portfolio anyway as I do most of my reporting out of
online aggregators. At one time, that wasn't the case. Still like MD
though, good for researching disbursements (except for late 2021 and
early 2022 as I never quite built the Charles Schwab transactions back
correctly, 2022 onward ok thanks to the aggregator I pay $2 a month for,
that works great, just slow, so sometimes I just bring it up-to-date
manually until system catches up).

Shrink data just removes redundant data from the data set nothing more nothing less so it is not expect to have any effect elsewhere. I would suggest you post your Moneydance error ls got see if it gives any insight as to the balance changes.
Depending on what operating system and version you are using the error log should be in one of the following locations
1. macOS
If you are using a Mac, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:
macOS Big Sur and Monterey:
~/Library/Containers/Moneydance/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
macOS X Lion until macOS X Catalina:
~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
macOS X Snow Leopard and earlier:
~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder you can open Finder and hold down the option key while selecting the Go menu and the Library folder option should occur or you can open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and copy and paste in the following:
~/Library
This should pull up your local Library folder.
2. Windows
If you are using Windows, it should be located under your login directory at:
Windows Vista and later:
C:\Users\(yourusername)\.moneydance\errlog.txt
or
Before Windows Vista:
C:\Documents and Settings\(yourusername)\.moneydance\errlog.txt
3. Linux
If you are using Linux it should be located in your home folder at:
~/.moneydance/errlog.txt

I got it to work. Below is note I sent to support after shrink.

just a user - I'm fairly certain that dwg was talking about your "Portfolio View" problem, not about shrinking the dataset.

As I mentioned, please go to help/console, grab the contents, and upload it it here. I’m pretty sure I know why the numbers go silly, but I need to see the console log.

When you are done, run toolbox extension, update mode, rename dataset to a better.shorter name,… 😉
