Toolbox - Duplicate & Non-Hierarchical Securities Alert/Error

I'm sure this is a Stuart question. I received the following alert message when I opened Toolbox: "ALERT - Potential duplicate(d) securities found (in Tools>Securities)!" When I closed that window, there was another error message window behind it: "ERROR - NON-HIERARCHICAL SECURITY ACCT TXNS >> Run 'FIX: Non-Hierarchical Security Act Txns (& detect Orphans)'..." However, when I went into the Currency & Security Tools Menu in Toolbox, there is no 'FIX: Non-Hierarchical Security Act Txns (& detect Orphans)' Update Function. I would also like to know whether the 'FIX: Merge 'duplicate' securities (and related investment txns) into one master security record (2021.2(3089) onwards)' Update Function is what I need to use to address the potential duplicate securities alert. Thanks.

I ran 'Can I delete security' on the Apple security I thought was not being used 'Apple Inc.' in my MD account. The attached message shows, there are no holdings, but it is being used in the same account as the Apple security with the holdings 'Apple, Inc.' However, I have looked through the register for the security and searched the register by the security name 'Apple Inc.' and by security id 'DE000JQ235A4' and come up with nothing. I don't know how to access the 'script output' to see if the details will provide me more information to be able to locate the transaction(s) associated with this security so I can correct them and then delete the security.

I would see if there are any transactions in that account for that security? One way to check is to a) tools/securities EDIT that security and call it 'APPLE Inc - LOOKFORME', then b) go to that account and see if there are any transactions? At this point, are you able to go to the securities Detail TAB, then Actions, then Remove security and select this one... Does it let you - or not? If it does, great... If not, look at the txns... Do they look OK to be merged to you? If so, then merge..

I changed the security name, searched the account register for the new name–still got nothing, selected the Securities Detail tab and successfully removed the security. However, when I closed out of MD and reopened it, I got the attached message, but my Apple Inc was not in the securities dropdown list to match to match it to even though it is in the list of securities under Tools. I even renamed the security from Apple, Inc. to Apple Inc and tried it again. Still no match so I just closed the window without selecting a security. I think this is how the duplicates have been created because when the security is not in the list, I usually just click "OK" and it creates it.

Here is what the downloaded transactions look like. The Quote Loader extension still isn't pulling down the price for my Apple security either.

I changed a couple of parameters in the Quote Loader, and it is now pulling down the prices for the Apple security correctly, but the online transaction download still can't find the Apple security with all the holdings.

I finally got the Apple security corrected. I went ahead and let the download create the duplicate, I fixed the ticker, price, and decimal places, to match, then did the merge. It seems to be correct now. That was a really long, tedious process; and unfortunately, I have a bunch more duplicates that were created the same way when, for whatever reason, the security in use is not showing up in the online download list and can, therefore, not be matched with the existing security. It's frustrating because I am far less familiar with the other duplicate securities; and, therefore less likely to be able to fix them.

Glad you got one apple mess sorted out. Now you know the process. Just tackle one per week.

I determined that the name changed on one of my securities back in 2018 and that's why they have the same ticker symbol and are showing as a potential duplicate. Apparently, MD created the new security with the new name, but same ticker and the online transaction sold all the holdings from the old name and bought the same number of holdings in the new name. Should I just remove the ticker symbol from the old name so it won't show as a duplicate since the old name is still connected to transactions prior to 2018?

Depends. Is it really the same security now and do you want it merged? If not, then yes, change the ticker and add ‘-something’ to the end.

Yes, it is the same security. The only thing that changed was the name. I guess it wouldn't hurt to just merge it. It would keep thinks a bit cleaner.

Done! I'm down to just one more duplicate in both my account and my granddaughter’s account. They are the same two securities in both accounts coming from TD AmeriTrade downloads. I had actually posted previously about these download that I have to delete to stay in balance because an agent at TDA told me those transactions through one of the securities is for internal purposes only, yet it is getting downloaded. TDA has been bought out by Charles Schwab, and the merge is beginning. Nothing is suppose to change in the short run, but who knows. Thanks for all your help Stuart! I think I can close this discussion.
