Limiting Decimals in Security Downloads.

When downloading security prices using the Quotes and Exchange Rates extension, several securities download with 6 digits to the right of the decimal point. Prices are downloaded from Yahoo Finance - USA. As a user with a base currency of US Dollar, I'd prefer all prices to have only 2 decimal positions. Is there a setting to limit the number of decimal positions that are downloaded?

    Hi,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

Firstly, (if you haven't already) we would recommend upgrading to the latest stable version. Moneydance 2023.1 (5006) is available to download from this page and it is a free upgrade for you!

You should remove or choose to overwrite the older version and restart Moneydance.

Then, navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions and install the Toolbox.
Launch the Toolbox and navigate to Toolbox Options->Update mode

    select->MENU: Currency & Security tools

From "Update Functions" choose FIX:Edit a Security's Decimal Place setting (adjust related Investment txns & Security balances accordingly).

    Finally restart Moneydance.

Hi Maddy, thank you for your reply but I don't think this solves my problem.

The method you recommended changes a security's decimal precision from 4 to whatever I wish. This method affects the shares held, not the price per share which is what I'm trying to limit. The important distinction here is this method changes the precision of shares held, not the downloaded price.

For example, the US ETF with a ticker symbol of VTI almost always gets downloaded more decimal precision than is needed or useful. Using the Quotes and Exchange Rates extension, a share price of $207.12 might get downloaded as $207.1200087. All I need is $207.12 as the remaining digits affect current value on securities with large share holdings. Is there a way to adjust the number of decimals that are downloaded through this extension? Thanks.

Could you look at the history for the shares and make sure that the current price is the same as the most recent price and that they are reasonable numbers.
You can also check that in Tools->Securities and double click the security.

    Hi he

You could try the Extension Quote Loader instead.

I ran your example security Ticker VTI, see screen shot.

In the Parameter tab there is a global setting Decimal Digits which you can use to limit the number of decimal places recorded from the source if you find it is returning to many places for your needs.

However the source Yahoo +TD only returned 2 decimal places although the Decimal Digits is set to 4. The last two digits being zeros.

For information on the features of this extension and how to use see post 64 at https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/investments/7595-quote-loader-version-2#comment_59176232

Download the PDF’s attached to post 64 and have a read.

To get an overview take a look at the YouTube videos by using the links on page 1 and 2 of the PDF.

The Quick Start Video is intended to give a quick overview so the user can see if Quite loader looks like it could work for them. The Short Video expands the user’s knowledge giving more detail. The Full Video goes even further but may be to wordy for some.

The PDF reinforces what’s leaned in the videos, provides step by step instructions, a must read and provide answers on how to handle less obvious issues some users may come across.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Derek, thank you for your help. I downloaded and installed Quote Loader and prices updated exactly as expected. The only problem I have with the extension is that the check boxes to the left of the ticker don't always appear. See the attached screenshot to see what I mean.

Interestingly, the buttons at the bottom of the screen for Selecting/Deselecting/Saving all lines work fine, as if the checkboxes were there. But other than this one issue, the extension works exactly as needed.

Reflecting on my post, I probably posted in the wrong forum -- Investments instead of Extension Development. I believe the problem I was experiencing was directly related to the extension I used for downloading quotes (Quotes and Exchange Rate Extension).

The problem previously reported is now solved. Thank you again for your help.

    Hi he

The individual Select check boxes, one for each security should only appear if its associated security has something to save. In the attached screen shot the ticker AIR does not return a New Price so no check box appears.

However I suspect you may be seeing something different. To analyses the issue it would help to see the full Quote Loader window as in my posts.

Hi Derek, thank you for your help. This extension is new to me so I'll refrain from commenting further until I've had a chance to use it more.

This extension fixes the problem I had, which was extraneous decimal points being downloaded for some securities. I no longer have to manually fix each price that contains more precision than I need.

Thank you again for your help.

    Hi he

Glad Quote Loader is working for you.

As you are new to Quote Loader if you haven’t already it worth looking at the PDF and taking time to view the video’s. In this way you will uncover extra features. For example if in the Quote Loader window you double click on a Ticker for a security its associated Moneydance security price history window will open.

    Have Fun, stay Safe.

Hi Derek, thank you for all your help. Quote Loader is doing exactly what I need for it to do.

Regarding the pdf documents for Quote Loader, they are chock full of very useful information that every new user would appreciate. Especially those migrating from Quicken, like myself, where security downloads are done "under the covers" with little user intervention. May I humbly suggest that those pdf docs be incorporated into the help text of the extension. I believe this would be enormously helpful to many.

Today, clicking the Help button from within the extension takes me to here:
    https://bitbucket.org/mikerb/moneydance-2019/wiki/New%20Quote%20Loader

I haven't yet been able to locate the videos you referenced in a previous post. If not too much trouble could you please provide a link?

    Thank you.

    Hi he

In Quote Loader if you click HELP, as you found, the link takes you to Mike Brays the Quote Loaders developer web site. The second sentence on that page provides a link to a section were you can download my PDF’s.

As for the videos the links are provided on page 1 and 2 of the main PDF.

Page 1 click on here to start Quick Start Guide.

Page 2 click on here to start Short Video and again the link here to start the Full Video.

    Have Fun, Stay Safe.

Hi Derek, thanks for all this good information. It's very helpful.

One question regarding sort order of the securities window: Is there a way to save a sort order so the window appears the same way each time it's opened? For example, I prefer to see my securities sorted by name, not by ticker, and I'd like the securities window to appear the same way each time I open it. Can this be done?

I've used this extension for a couple of weeks and it's perfect for my use. Thank you again for helping me learn it.

    Hi he

There is no way to remember a change in sort order.
On opening Quote Loader it always defaults to Tickers.
    Sorry.

    Have Fan, Stay safe.
