Investments in left pane showing 0 but I have history in securities

I hope I describe what's happening OK here. I'm looking at switching from Quicken 2006. I've created investment headings and have created securities underneath,. I added price history for the securities and can see in the security detail and also by showing history. I also get a nice history graph on the bottom. Only problem is even though the security details and history seem OK, the overall investment account on the left only shows the investment account name and the amount shows $0. I would expect it to show the securities I have assigned to the investment account and show the total of the securities assigned to the investment account. I must be missing something.

What I have always done in Quicken is treat my IRA account as one share at some value and then add the current price history to reflect the current value of the account and also I can see and plot the history. I don't want to try to duplicate my broker statement I just want to track the overall account value current and past..

I'm sure I can probably do it in moneydance but not sure if my thinking and assumptions of how things connect is correct.

Hope this is clear and I can get help in setting this up.

Thanks ., . Tom

    Hi Tom,

One reason that an account will show a $0.00 balance on the sidebar is if the account has been marked as 'Inactive'.

Open Moneydance to the account in question.
From the Moneydance menu bar, go to Account > Edit Account.
Here you can check to see if the account has been marked as inactive.

Thanks for the input Kevin. I checked and all investment accounts are active. Not sure how they stitch everything together in the investment account initial balance is 0. If I changed the initial to some number it will show in the left pane investment account. I do have securities under the investment account and have price histories entered but they con combine and show under investments. The securities do show up in the summary screen with the most current price I entered. Alos looks like the securities are not added to the net worth calc. Has to be something I' not doing.

    Thanks again . .

    Hi Tom

Once you set up a Security did you go through the process of adding it to an investment account.
Highlight investment account in Side Bar, list on left and click SECURITIES DETAIL tab then click ADD SECURITY BUTTON. Once you have added the security click the REGISTER tab and click NEW TRANSACTION to buy the security.
    Also see https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/investment-accounts

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Kevin,

Sorry for the delay in getting back.

I didn't initially specifically add security to the investment account. Thanks for that info. Figured it was something silly that I miss interpreted. I then gave it a try and assigned some price history to the security. I see the cost info in securities but still not tallied under the investment account on the left pane like I would expect and, didn't see it show up as part of net worth.

I also poked around in taking the approach of just calling the IRA account an asset. Then I just copy increase and decrease amounts from my broker statement and enter them as a transaction of increase or decrease. This so far seems to do what I want and does tally under the net worth total. As I mentioned, I don't want to try to duplicate what my broker already does well in their statements. I just want to track ups and downs as a total and see the net worth. The asset approach may well be all I need to keep it nice and straightforward forward and simple.

I'll likely also still create a dummy investment and security that I can play around with to understand better how the investment and securities work and see if they act as I am imagining they should.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate.

    Hi Tom

It sounds that you would rarther use a Asset account but for info see the following.

It sounds like you followed the first part of my suggestion, add security to the investment account but not the second part of the advice perform a buy. In the investment account REGISTER tab click NEW TRANSACTION to buy the security. Selecting the DATE, ACTION - BUY or BUYXFR as appropriate, SECURITY, SHARES number of shares to buy, and PRICE of shares each share . Until you do this the investment account can’t have a value.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Kevin,

I did the buy and now the $$ show in overall investment. Phew! read all of the directions Tom!!!!! Overall it seems a bit more than I need to treat it as an investment. Yep... I think in my case the asset approach might work fine for me. I have 3 IRA accounts very easy to take an increase or decrease amount from Wells Fargo statement and make a simple transaction for the account. It reflects in the side panel and also the net worth. I figure the IRA is an asset anyway. This way I can just have a real basic overall number for checking accts, House values, and IRA values at a quick glance. Usually, if I need more info I just go to my brokerage account. for more info or more detailed performance or what holdings are.

Kevin, I really do appreciate all of your help. I also learned a lot about Moneydance.

    Thanks . . . Tom

    HI Tom,

As happy as I am to hear that you were able to finally get this sorted, I cannot take credit for it.

In my initial post I suggested that you look to see if the account was marked as 'inactive'.

The majority of the help that you received was provided by forum member derekkent23.

Derek, as you've witnessed, is very knowledgeable when it comes to the workings of Moneydance.
