I just transferred shares of a stock from one brokerage to another. How do I record this transfer in Moneydance?

    Hi Lee,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

You can navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions (when the Toolbox is already installed) you will see the option Toolbox: Move investment transactions.

You'll be asked to ensure that the Quote and Exchange Rates Updater or the Quote loader are not updating your security prices while you are moving/merging investment accounts.

In the resulting window you can choose HELP/GUIDE prior to proceed moving your investment transactions from an account to the other.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Thanks, Maddy, for your reply. I tried your suggestion, printed out the dense 2 page instruction sheet, attempted the transfer, and immediately got an error message. The problem fix was simply too complicated for me to follow-up on.

So at this point I cannot show the transfer of stock.

The above error indicates that you should implement a fix prior to be able to 'Move investment transactions'.

In other words, firstly you should launch the Toolbox and select Update Mode, choose MENU: Transactions tools.

Then select the ‘ FIX - Non-Hierarchical Security Acct Txns (& detect Orphans)

    • select the fix_investment_txns_to_wrong_security.py option.

    Restart Moneydance.

Then you should be able to repeat the steps in post 1 of this thread.

Lastly, I've added Stuart Beesley (the Toolbox developer) to this discussion as he may want to add further suggestions.

Hi, as Maddy says, you simply need to run the fix first... It's pretty much automatic....

    Let us know?

    Thank you, Maddy and Stuart.

When I follow the instructions to Fix the account, it cites potential errors (none of which are incorrect) in accounts I am not seeking to transfer. I just want to move one stock to a different brokerage account. I am uneasy about doing the fix (especially when I encountered the dialog box requiring me to accept full responsibility if the fix messes things up!) since those accounts do not need to change.

I will simply keep my stock where it is and not change anything. I could "sell" in the original account and buy the same stock in the new one, but then I will not have accurate gain/loss information. That is why I will keep it where it is. Perhaps someday the transfer of a single stock to a different brokerage will be a simple Moneydance process that does not require Toolbox.

If you don’t fix the data issues now, then you will undoubtedly hit a data issue later and wish you had fixed the issues before.

As for the scary message. Take a backup first. It will be fine, but if you don’t like the fix then simply restore.

    Up to you.
