On a recent download from Charles Schwab, I'm being asked by MD to chose a security. This security already exists in my portfolio. When I go to chose the Security, it is not showing up in the drop down list. I've included screenshots to show that the security exists. It has a dozen existing transactions. The security is active. I'm not really sure what to do?

The issue is that MD only supports one SEDOL or CUSIP for a security.

If you get a second SEDOL or CUSIP, the picklist only shows the securities which dont have one already.

I have asked for this to be corrected for months or more, but nothing yet.

In the meantime, its a pain, as you get doubled securities and such. i tend to fix this by hand , i.e reassign the new security back to the "real" one, but it happens again the next time the security changes.

You can try to fix the table itself with toolbox, but i dont recommend doing so, as it is easy to do wrong.

Ahh....gotcha.... I have quite a mess now. More and more of these new/old securities are pouring in from Schwab. I have a dozen or so now across 7 different accounts.

I'm not really sure what to do.

    That is a mess.

you might be able to combine these using toolbox, but that will pick one sedol/cusip, and then you'll get this repeated at some point. there should be one main one that shows up versus older ones, but i doubt either of us would remember such.

i don't have as many as you do, and Ive figured out the sedol used (also in schwab) currently for some cases, but not all... i change those manually each time i see one.

@Stuart - can securities like this be combined? can the sedol/cusip table in toolbox be edited to allow more than one sedol? (i don't think so, and even if yes, i don't know if md would interpret it correctly.)

@Roger - create a brand new thread pointing out this inadequacy in moneydance. I've done it more than once, but this would help show it's an endemic problem that needs a solution.

Yes, this is an issue for me as well. I have two accounts that each have close to 300 securities. In one account when I downloaded the transactions, the security ID / SEDOL is ^ABT (Abbott Labs) and in the other it was ^002824100 (the CUSIP). I can't match them - and so have 600 securities. Also, when you first import the security it doesn't set the ticker - so I would have to do that manually. Then, using the toolbox merge tool doesn't seem to have batch merging, so I would have to use the pull down for all 300 securities.

I spend so much time reconciling MD entries with my brokerage fixing non-matching securities - that I have no time left to actually do analysis to see the performance. Then the cycle starts over the next month... :-(

Also, to clarify - if one account uses CUSIP and the other uses SEDOL for the security ID - do I keep both Securities and set the ticker to the same? Otherwise, when I download future transactions, in one account it'll not be able to match because I switched the security id from SEDOL to CUSIP?

Any smarter way to manage this until MD knows they are the same security?

It needs to be fixed and we need to state this in the forums... right now attention is being paid to the "squeaky wheels", not to this matter (though we may be starting to get attention as this becomes more noticed and mentioned bu users)

As to how to manage this for now? nothing easy, i have nothing like 300 duplicates and am fixing mine by hand, and yes it happens each time there is a dividend or something like that.

Sorry, a bit confused…. Isn’t this “the forums?” Do I need to start this thread somewhere else?

Sometimes different forum areas get more attention. Like the Problems area might get more attention than Investments because of the type of posts that occur in them.

You can also be more specific now as to what the Problem is.....

Ok - I created the following thread in the Problem forum.

Do you know if Quote Loader supports two securities with different security IDs but same ticker? I tried yesterday but didn't see both of them - will play around more tomorrow.

I am not support staff just a user.
    Hi mdu

As you have found some Financial Institutions in there downloads, when the same Security exists in more than one Investment Account, indicate to which account the data should be routed by adding an extra identifier. This is not a situation I have personally faced.

You questioned if there is a work around in Quote Loader to overcome the principle set by Moneydance that for a given security there should be only be only one ticker, including any hidden identifiers, across all accounts, maybe, see the section Duplicate Securities page 12 of my PDF “Quote Loader V2 Extension Moneydance 2022-2024 V12.5” attached to post 220 at
    https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/investments/7595-quo...

This feature was introduced some year back to help a user in a similar situation to yourself. As stated this is not a situation I face so I don’t know if it is a fix that would work for you.

Perhaps restore a backup and test the solution it offers to see if it works in your case.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, derekkent23. Yes, I tried it out - on ticker : ABBV, I created a 2nd ticker called ABBV#1 and saw Quote loader source set to 'copy from primary'
