As the title suggests, I have a syncing scenario I'd like your advice about.

Currently, I use Google Drive (or Google Backup and Sync) for sharing files between these devices.

Currently, my main Moneydance database in is a local Google Drive folder on my primary MacOS main system.

The only options I am given in my main computer's Moneydance menus (File/Syncing...) about syncing are to either use a "shared folder" or to use a "DropBox Connection". I am OK with having a main MacOS computer which is always online, and which stores a backup of the working database in its DropBox folder. I accept that I should create manual Moneydance backups from this main computer's DropBox local folder. I already have a DropBox account set up for this, but I have not yet synced any other computers.

I'm certainly willing to move the Moneydance database from Google Drive to the online DropBox folder and the local DropBox folder in the main MacOS system, and work from whichever of those database locations you would recommend, but does that mean my main computer should be set up for syncing with "shared folder", or should I use "DropBox connection"?

For the other computers (2 Win10 systems, 1 additional MacOS system), I suppose I should set them up with "DropBox Connection", right? I don't expect to be using them offline. The highest priority for me is getting all these computers to share and update the same Moneydance database.

For the Android and iPhone, should they also be set up with "DropBox Connection"? All these devices use the cellular data network, so I'll assume I can always connect if I need to.

Thanks for your advice!

Regards,

As you are using mobile devices you must use Dropbox for syncing data. this is because these devices use the Dropbox API to pass the data back and forth. Hence on the mobile you are effectively going to use what is known as Dropbox connection.

The option for Dropbox connection/Folder is only available on desktop type systems (Windows, MacOS, Linux) Dropbox connection use the API and requires the a machine to be online when Moneydance is being used. Dropbox folder requires the Dropbox client to be installed and this facilitates online or offline use of Moneydance.

Each machine will maintain a local Moneydance data set, you should NOT place the Moneydance data set in any shared location, whether is be a Dropbox or other sharing service folder, a shared network drive etc. Dropbox is being used to pass updates between all systems involved in the syncing process under the control of the Moneydance software. Manually placing and using a data set from a shared locations runs the risk of data corruption.

Articles in the knowledge base section given below outlines the use of syncing in Moneydance.
