Hi L. R. Du Broff

If you want your syncing setup to include mobile devices you must sync using at least a free Dropbox account. If you were only syncing between computers then using the sync method Shared Folder should work with iCloud. I am not an Apple user so have not tested iCloud but have tested OneDrive, Google Drive, Box.com and PDrive and all work using Moneydance Shared Folder.

As for the difference between Dropbox Folder and Connection this from Sean the software developer.

“With "Dropbox Connection" Moneydance uses the Dropbox API to talk to the Dropbox service directly. So, you don't need to have Dropbox client actually installed on your computer, but you do need to be online when Moneydance is running in order for changes to be synced. With "Drobox Folder" Moneydance will just read and write files to your Dropbox folder on your computer, which means that you need to have Dropbox client installed and running, but you don't need to be online in order for Moneydance to read and write the changes.”

Just to add from my own testing.

Dropbox Connection
If transactions were added when no internet connection was available and you close Moneydance then syncing will only occur then the internet is re-established and you open Moneydance, no data is lost.

Dropbox Folder
If transactions were added when no internet connection was available and you close Moneydance then syncing will occurs when the internet connection is re-established, Moneydance does not have to be re-opened. This is due to the installation of Dropbox client, the Dropbox folder on your computer.

I use Dropbox Folder on my three computers, but due to Dropbox imposed free account limits if I wanted to connect a fourth computer I would use Dropbox Connection on that

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479570122019-12-31T20:12:08Z2019-12-31T20:12:08ZMoneyDance Sync, Pre-Purchase Question

I'm a fellow user.

As Derek has stated the use of Dropbox is mandatory when you want to sync mobile devices (any device running either IOS or Android O/S)

Desktops have the choice of using Connection or Folder, Folder has the advantage here of provided offline access for Moneydance usage at the expense of using one Dropbox allowed connection license. Dropbox Connection on the other hand does not use the Dropbox licensed connections, Mobile devices are effectively using Dropbox Connection at all times.

As to why Moneydance uses Dropbox. The Moneydance suite runs on 5 Operating systems, very few solutions supports all 5. Not all solutions have an API that would facilitate the mobile implementation of Moneydance.

dwg
